      Software Engineer Interview

      9 Dec 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Singapore
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Wise (Singapore) in Dec 2017

      Interview

CV was sent through web-site. Recruiter was very quick to reply and quite flexible to schedule the first round call. And this was the only positive and smooth experience with them. I was told it would be a 30 minutes chat about my recent experience, so I was asked not to worry about preparing anything. When the call started, I couldn't see interviewer's face, he put his laptop on his knees and only his chin was visible. I was too nervous to ask him to amend his camera, moreover I thought it would be impolite of me. But he must have seen himself in the corner of the screen! Call started ok, as expected we walked very briefly through my most recent job and technologies used there. After that I was asked more about technologies and stacks from my previous jobs (2 years ago, 5 years ago) - questions got deeper to the details, some of them I couldn't answer precisely, giving only short description (technology X was used to build feature Y) and I was saying I need to revise X to answer in more details. Such my answers were wrongly perceived as if I don't know the correct answer or as if I never used technology X. Here I must say they didn't set my expectations well when saying I don't need to prepare anything. Then he switched to algorithmic questions and questions on simple data structures. This was even more shocking for me! However, questions were mostly simple, nothing hardcore and I answered ok. The call ended and I expected some feedback. Having fast replies from recruiter about scheduling, I was shocked again when feedback arrived only 3 days later from email address starting with no-reply@.... It was negative and it contained words 'We thought you had a strong application...' I did realise that this interview was not the best of mine as expecting a chat about my recent experience, I had no chance to properly show my skills facing more technology questions than ones related to my experience or soft skills! I must say, I was expecting to be estimated for company culture fit, to be asked more about processes (scrum, waterfall, whatever else) and daily routines... soft skills questions, tell me when you missed the deadline and all that stuff.. Of course, I didn't have much opportunities to show neither my hard nor my soft skills! From the candidate's perspective, it was strongly negative experience.

      Interview

The interview process was long but designed to test soft skill along with the usual coding. I felt the interviewers looked more at my thought process and evaluated how good of a teammate I would be in Wise’s environment.

      Question 1

The pair programming round was generic one. They gave a class with methods to be completed.

      Interview

In pair-programming round i got the question on circuit breaker. They gave an object oriented skeleton code with some placeholders to fill-up. Evaluation criteria would be mostly on if u knew about the circuit breaker before, if u are able to think and propose multiple approaches, how well you can collaborate with the interviewer. You need not write syntax perfect code as you need not compile or execute it but the code should be optimised enough with right data structures. I found the overall experience to be quiet good and easier than FAANG.

About Circuit Breaker that count failures in time based window

      Interview

Applied online. Received online assessment link. Gave their hackerrank test which had 2 coding questions. All test cases passes. Immediately received automated mail that recruiter will contact you. After few hours got email that they have decided to move forward with other candidates. That is my application was not even reviewed by the recruiter(which usually takes 1-2 mins) before sending the test link.
