Pros

- Great work/life balance - Can realistically take on as many inspections as you like. If you're really ambitious the opportunity is there. - Not stuck in an office (100% field work) - Great for those interested in engineering education as you're often communicating engineering concepts to homeowners/buyers/sellers - Team is always available for technical expertise and help with difficult clients

Cons

- Occasional exceptionally unpleasant crawlspace - Having to deliver bad news - Entry level engineers may face scrutiny regarding their qualifications so be prepared to confidently back up your experience level! - Depending on where you live in the Bay Area and where/when the inspection is, traffic can be terrible (this isn't unique to this particular job though)

Pros

The company has an excellent reputation for honest, independent foundation inspections that fairly represent clients involved. The owner is a submarine veteran, which is genuinely impressive and a highly knowledgeable Civil Engineer PE with a strong commitment to integrity and professional ethics. What I respect most is his leadership style. Instead of a “you’re fired” mentality , I think he believes in mentorship. He teaches, challenges, and assigns “homework” to help young engineers grow, which has been incredibly valuable to me. Based on my experience so far, he leads more like a teacher than an office boss, and that mindset makes a real difference. The team itself is also a strong point. You work with a young, well-educated group in their 20s and 30s, and the overall morale is noticeably higher than people might expect from a small company. There’s a shared sense of professionalism, mutual respect, and genuine motivation to improve. Overall, it’s a place where integrity matters, learning is encouraged, and people are invested in helping each other grow.

Cons

Timing is critical in this line of work. The accuracy of the report, along with clear and effective communication, directly reflects the company’s image and credibility. To be successful, you must remain highly focused on both the fieldwork and the reporting process, understanding that every detail matters and keep learning.
