Overworked, More Corporate, and More Ruthless

Pros

The company is positioned to possibly be an industry leader and revolutionize the contact center field. Personal Development fund gives you $1k per quarter to learn something you want (e.g acting, sports, etc.)

Cons

After seeing the reviews, I thought it was a great place to work. And when I first started working here, I thought it was too. I was asked to write a review around 1-2 months after joining, and like many of the reviews, I gave it a positive one. But the culture has been changing and I've seen some things that made me change my mind. You can get fired with no prior notice. I've seen many people (from top and bottom) get kicked out without them seeing it coming. Some people are definitely over worked. Pay isn't that competitive.

Good work experience if you can survive

Pros

There are opportunities to get valuable work experience at Balto. The experience I got and the work I did were very helpful in advancing my career. If you can keep your head down and manage the volatility, Balto could be a good opportunity. The people doing the actual work to build the product are generally great and a pleasure to work with. Which is good because working is pretty much the only thing you will do at Balto.

Cons

You are not valued beyond being a cog in the machine to build the Balto product. This was demonstrated most clearly in summer 2022, when the CEO said in company-wide meeting there would not be layoffs, less than a week later 20% of the company was laid off with no warning. Don't expect good work/life balance. You will be expected to work as much as possible. You will likely be underpaid at Balto. I was underpaid by more than 15% in my final role at Balto and know there are people across departments and roles who have reported a similar disparity in their pay compared to market rates.

Pros

The people that make up (or made up before layoffs) were some of the most brilliant people I've ever met in my life and a blast to work with. Kudos to the recruitment team (that got laid off) that found all of this talent. I have learned soooo much from working with these engineers. I always thought their talent was wasted on a call center app run by sales bros.

Cons

There's a lot but I'll just say this, Lack of diversity has always been a problem at Balto, and with their most recent round of layoffs about half of the people let go fall under a protected class. They laid off all of their female presenting engineers except for one. It's a boys club.
