Pros
Some talented people on staff. People who do the actual work are hardworking and passionate.
Cons
Where do I even begin? No trust in employees. You're treated like children. Management doesn't take advice from specialists who they hired for particular roles. Everything is based on what the owner thinks will work instead of actual market data. If someone leaves, roles are transferred to other staff members to take on the work load with little to no notice or raise in pay. (A Journalist shouldn't be doing an Event Manager's job and vice versa). Everyone is being asked to take on too much work, so almost all business efforts are diluted, under developed, or rushed. People are hired without proof of skills and then are thrown into the job without any proper orientation or clear definitions of tasks or responsibility. Very high level of tension at all times. Most "leadership" are not supportive and want you to simply "put your head down" and "just do the work." Not a team environment, even though it's constantly preached. Dead end with no where to move up within the organization. Mostly a dictatorship. Business goals/focus change from week to week.
Pros
Great team (excluding management). Learned a lot and got to try a lot of different things
Cons
- The turnover is insane. The company lost around 10-15 people in the year I was employed. - Management/leadership is terrible. They keep piling work on while never giving you space to complete your actual job responsibilities. Priorities are constantly shifting with little to no notice, making it impossible to actually achieve anything. Passive aggressiveness and disorganization are rampant. - Staff is not trusted by management and working from home is heavily frowned upon. Most folks are pretty unhappy about working there and morale is incredibly low. - Whether this company can actually succeed as a business is also doubtful. Income is pretty hit-or-miss and the business is kept afloat by the founder’s personal bank account. In summary, they know how to put on a great dog and pony show during the interview process. Actually working there is a completely different monster. Don’t fall for it.
Pros
Most people on the team are a lot of fun.
Cons
No leadership, no clear business plan, no stability. Company goals and departments are constantly changed and extremely unorganized. Business practices are questionable and, at times, unethical. Many in leadership are unprofessional and inexperienced. Clear favoritism and you don't want to get on the founder's bad side. Both founders constantly at odds made for an uncomfortable environment. Everyone answers to one person who is extremely entitled, scatterbrained and unpredictable. Some people in leadership who have the ability to change the company culture won't because they are scared to answer to the founder. They draw business from the same companies but pitch themselves as a growing business. They have a lot of trouble raising capital and are not sustainable with the current business model. Promise clients more than they can deliver. Customers were paying lots for services they weren't satisfied with or never received. No room for growth. Pitch themselves as a startup but do not resemble a successful business or startup culture at all. Very stressful environment.
