Pros

- memes - flexible hours - amazing team to work with, very supportive and friendly - interview process was great from the start. Quite thorough and they were patient with me - You get to learn a lot and you work with some wonderful people

Cons

- some of the work is a bit repetitive (not a con for me personally though, I tend to enjoy it a bit more that way)

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about us on Glassdoor! Job seekers regularly visit our profile here to try and get a better understanding of what it's like to work for us, so your feedback is very valuable. I love everything you've mentioned under 'Pros', as this really speaks to the culture we have and want to sustain as our company grows. Positivity, flexibility, and openness are our core values and support for those starts at the top. Your point about repetitiveness is noted. In the past, our flexibility has allowed team members seeking job enlargement to do so without putting pressure on those who wish to remain specialists to venture outside their comfort zone. As we work to further define the roles within our teams, we can do more to encourage professional growth for those who feel the same way and are wanting more. If you want to discuss anything any further, or have advice for management in the future, please don't hesitate to reach out. I am always glad to meet and continue the conversation. -- Brendan

Pros

Want to work with people who love chess, good code, and discussion? Like corporate meetups, eliminating one of the biggest cons of remote work? Like flexible hours? I sure do, and the kind of people Chess.com attracts are unerringly passionate, interesting, and ready to build something great.

Cons

Time zone differences can be rough, on occasion.

Pros

Flexible working hours. Decent salary

Cons

Working at Chess.com has been a unique experience, to say the least. The company culture seems to emulate a dictatorship, with a predominant male dominance that trickles down from the top. The CEO's involvement in every aspect of the company becomes stifling, leaving little room for employees to execute their roles autonomously. The so-called mentoring programs they offer are nothing more than thinly veiled attempts to suppress individuality. The main takeaway seems to be "keep your ego aside," which translates to a thinly veiled threat to conform and abandon any semblance of personal opinions or identity. It's a workplace that rewards compliance and punishes those who dare to have a different perspective. If you're someone who thrives in an environment where being a yes-man is the key to success, then Chess.com might be the place for you. However, if you value a workplace that encourages diversity of thought and individuality, you might find yourself struggling to navigate the rigid hierarchy and oppressive culture at this company.

Thank you so much for sharing! We're very proud of the working environment that everyone has built. Those values of trust, compassion and empathy are truly at the centre of everything we do and I know the whole team is committed to that. I completely agree that keeping things flexible and maintaining the remote and non-corporate vibe is just so much more…fun! That said, yes we are growing quickly and that comes with its own challenges. It’s going to continue to be a learning process, but it’s great to know that you're with us on this journey. Your ideas and concerns are crucial and will continue to help shape the future of the company. Thanks again for taking the time to post this, and please feel welcome to connect 1:1 to discuss further at any time!
