Pros

Mostly smart colleagues who are not too pompous. Variety of projects helps retain interest levels.

Cons

Too many to list.. but the worst is that as of Jan 2022, permissive time off is gone and 40hrs/week employees are only given ONE week of vacation/sick time regardless of # years worked. They've stripped away all of our benefits: worst in class, very high deductible health care, terrible work-life balance, high risk of losing pensions, dead stock, sub par dental and eye care, 50% of the people expected to do 110% of the work, massive attrition in last 4 years (center is down to 1/4 of what it was 5-10 years ago), expected to work overtime or not get vacation, totally uncaring , clueless, and bloated administration/leadership. HR is evil, and stupid. GRC no longer cares about the people or technology, just getting Govt. dollars in the door to keep the lights on, which is not sustainable. 15 years ago, GRC was awesome and I was proud to work here, but this is a sinking ship and now I'm ashamed. I have near zero work pride and the admin, finance and HR have sucked every last bit of life away from the employees. AVOID at all costs, most of us are just riding it out till the inevitable end. Your talents are better used elsewhere.

Pros

Some of the best and brightest people to work with. Work life balance is fine if you don't abuse your time and do your work as required. Location does have a lot to offer. Adirondacks/Canada to NYC, Boston to Buffalo all well within 1/2 day drive. Area rich in history. Local institutions such as RPI, UNION, & Albany State offer classes to expand you knowledge. (Ask about tuition refund)

Cons

Management is pulled from current ranks. Most if not all are not trained in the skills needed to lead people. Although some are good, most are on an ego trip. Employment threats and demeaning behavior is rampant especially in the materials sector of the lab. Backbiting and torpedoing are common practice as well as demoralizing attitudes. This has been going on for decades. Folks are told to “tell it like it is”. A word of advice? Don’t do it or you will be singled out and subsequently punished. Mr. Culp needs to take notice.
