Pros

Very few staff are dedicated and passionate about client care.

Cons

My experience at Gay Men’s Health Crisis was marked by poor management, lack of structure, and what felt like deeply unfair workplace practices. There was little to no proper onboarding or training, yet expectations were high and inconsistently enforced. Management often failed to provide the guidance needed to succeed, and when concerns were raised, they were frequently dismissed or ignored. There were clear inconsistencies in how employees were treated. As a Black employee, I experienced workplace dynamics that reflected bias and inequity, particularly in how support, accountability, and communication were applied across staff. I also observed practices and decision-making that raised serious concerns for me about compliance and oversight. While I cannot speak to internal investigations, what I witnessed did not align with the level of accountability expected in an organization of this kind. Additionally, negative feedback about the organization does not appear to remain visible over time, which raises concerns about transparency and whether prospective employees are seeing an accurate picture of the workplace. Ultimately, I left due to the impact the environment had on my well-being and the lack of meaningful support or accountability.

Pros

I was able to work directly with clients and the lead of the department early on and was exposed to much of the same work case managers were tasked with.

Cons

big organization, but really you just work within your own team/department

Pros

Sometimes you can work remote and friendly staff. New ceo might make better changes.

Cons

Thinking about applying to Gmhc? Don’t waste your time. 98% of the jobs are ghost jobs meaning they the job the role already been filled from management pulling someone in before posting the job description. Yet they still post roles with no intention of hiring and have hundreds of candidates waste time. They doesn’t promote from within they rather hire external candidates. It’s very hard to switch positions in the company, which leads to high turnover rates. The pay is low, and management and People Ops are non-responsive and not supportive. Also stay farrrrrrrrrrr away from the Housing Department and financial management . These are the most unorganized, inefficient departments that honestly has too many roles and supervisors with too much time on their hands. There is an extremely high turnover rate in the Housing Dept. It is a mess, and most supervisors lack the necessary education qualifications or leadership skills.
