Pros
I don’t even have five words to fill the minimum word count.
Cons
I unfortunately had the displeasure of working for many unjust companies. One of which I had to fight in court to get paid. However Kelly Services/Language Line Solutions is still the worst company I have ever worked for. They will not think of you or treat you like a human being. 1. As an interpreter, you will not be treated as a human being. a. For example, you are trained to press the mute button to take a sip of water, cough, or sneeze. The company will accumulate all the split seconds you did so and deduct that from your pay. b. You will not be allowed to use the bathroom frequently. If you so happened to use the bathroom, let’s say, three times for that 8 hour shift, you will automatically get a threatening text message to your personal phone saying you may be terminated if you keep doing so. c. Sometimes your shift will be over, but you will be stuck in a call that is difficult to get out of (ex. Medical emergency). It so happens that you ended up working a little over 8hours that day. Well, Kelly will deduct minutes off of your actual labour because once it goes over 8 hours, legally, that gets tricky for them. On this day, Kelly removed time from my work to land perfectly at 7hours and 59 minutes instead. And voilà! You just worked for free. 2. There is absolutely ZERO communication a. You will be assigned to various people in the training and 600 hour probation (trial) period. Until this point, someone will respond to you and answer questions (which you will inevitably get a lot of). After that, you will be assigned to a “talent advisor (aka. TA)”. During the year of working, I have NEVER, no exaggeration, not once received a response from this person. You will have to wing it. Are you terribly sick and do not know what to do because you are new to the job? No one will respond to you on what the protocol is. 3. Changes your livelihood without even blinking an eye a. You may have signed a full time contract for 36.5 hours. You may have budgeted your life around your small earnings that are not competitive to the industry. Then one day, while you are working, you may get an email saying that now your hours are reduced to part time. 20something hours at that. Oh and by the way, that will be effective in 3days time. Rent is due next week, but that’s fine, Kelly, just announce to me that I am now essentially out of a livelihood while I am interpreting for your clients. b. Oh and did you want to contest the sudden change in hours? Who are you going to talk to? As mentioned in #2, no one will ever respond to you. So good luck. c. BTW, you will be told that your hours are reduced due to call volumes but you will see them constantly hiring new interpreters for your language and just putting everyone into part time status. 4. Benefits? NONE. You will start feeling the irony of interpreting for the medical industry while you cannot afford to go to the hospital yourself. 5. Did you sign up to be a medical interpreter? That might not entirely be the case a. Despite these horrible conditions, I still found interpreting for the medical industry fulfilling and a good use of what I could offer: helping sick patients get their voices heard. However, that is not entirely the case. Unlike the job description, you also have to interpret for gamblers in casinos, debt collectors, and disgruntled customers of telecommunication and financial companies. For example, you may need to take a very difficult call and inform a family that their father is suddenly brain dead. And then on the next call you may have to deal with a person yelling at you for the internet being slow. What I mean to say is, the pay is nowhere near compensating for your hard work. 6. Closes off all communication with any other interpreters a. Once you get your schedule, you might want to discuss them with the people your trained with or just have a conversation. Guess what? The company has now blocked communication amongst each other. While you are training, get their email addresses or something, because you will have no way of communicating with them. I am assuming they probably dealt with law suits in the past from ppl accumulating. Do your research. Believe the reviews that don’t suck up to them. Make the right choice. Kelly Services should be, it must be, your last choice.
