Heavily political + toxic work environment = high turnover rate - Creative Manager Macy's Employee Review

Pros

It's in NYC which means you can search for other jobs.

Cons

Be careful. This place has an extremely high turnover rate. Never have I seen so many goodbye emails in 1 year! On my first week I witnessed over 10 resignations! They say a toxic work environment usually has high turnover. This is true. Most people usually stay a year. The others stick around hoping for a promotion which in the end doesn't match up to industry standards in terms of compensation. It is a myth that only companies with poor performance are toxic. This company boasts record breaking profits where employees are expected to work and cheer for themselves tirelessly, but do not see any recognition or reward from it, especially in the form of raises or bonuses. Most benefits, including bonuses are only available to director level and above. Macy's is notorious for its low pay across the board, whether for store associates or corporate employees. They keep the morale going through "magic", celebrity appeal, brand familiarity, etc. (similar to Disney), but beyond all the smoke and mirrors, looking from the inside, there's a lot more that meets the eye. Cannot work remotely as easily as other tech companies because of security reasons. The NY office is heavily political, cliquish, with many a promotion stemming from favoritism. And little to no transparency within teams as members are silently urged to compete with one other. Something is very wrong, morale is not consistent or stable, and social activities are rare. All of this may stem from top management that focuses exclusively on profits like 50,60,70% growth in each respective year. The team works tirelessly to deliver those results, but the negative effects are devastating.

Pros

you get ok pto even as a part timer, not physically demanding, good A/C and heating depending on the weather.

Cons

very low pay compared to other businesses, you only get a 40 cent raise every year. same playlist consisting of 15 songs on repeat and it drives you crazy as time goes on. very inconsistent hours they rarely give morning shifts, you only get the more undesirable shifts like closing which ends at 9:30pm. the sales goals will be exceeded and they hours will still be cut especially around the holiday season. numerous amounts of time where i am left alone at the register on a busy day with no backup and still expected to clean fitting rooms and recover the floor with no help. overall no room for growth, started when i was 18 and am now 20 and have not even been considered or offered a higher position, 2 tiny raises is all i got. i overall feel like my position is bottom of the barrel compared to asset protection, jewelry department, and fragrance sales because they get paid better and make commission while doing less easier work. would not recommend and if you do end up working at a Macys use the experience you have and never stop applying to jobs because there really is no growth here.
