The Markel Style is second to none. It is instilled by tenured management into associates. Markel has a wonderful reputation in the industry and in Richmond, VA. There are opportunities, you just have to find them.
Cons
There are a lot of folks that have been at Markel for a long time, and moving up the chain can be difficult if you are not at the right at the right time.
