I’ve never posted on Glassdoor before, but my experience at MetaCoastal necessitates it. It is essential to speak truth to power.
The positive review below is amusing and lacks credibility. Never mind that this department has had 5 leaders in 5 years! Doesn’t that tell you something? (And other departments have fared far worse!) This company cycles through leaders like I cycle through laundry. Never mind that this employee had been with the company mere days. Never mind that it is quite natural to have “first-day-of-school” excitement after just one week on the job. Give it time. The CEO is good at conning people into thinking he is a good guy initially; but disingenuous charm only goes so far. Why not focus on creating a better place to work, rather than creating the illusion that it is so? The reviews will change organically if you are focused on the right things. There is a reason why the turnover rate here is nearly 50%; and posting artificially positive reviews is not the solution.
There is a difference between caring about what your employees are saying about you, and CARING ABOUT YOUR EMPLOYEES. Mr. Callahan fails to see that difference. Even in his feeble attempts to “dig deeper” to make changes, he fails to look at himself as the starting point. It’s sad and unfortunate for all the good people there who toil every day to line his pocketbook.
Also, Mr. Callahan’s lunches and meetings with employees are not for the purpose he would lead you to believe. He is not listening because he cares. Rather, it is his insidious way to gather gossip and material for his case-building when he decides to make a move against you or your peers, which is likely to occur if any of you ever use your voice to call out an issue. Despite his assertions, he somehow regards constructive feedback as dissent and disloyalty in the ranks, like this is a 19th century military school. As a result, most people there have learned to just stay quiet and suffer in silence until another job opportunity presents itself.
I quickly learned that you either have to be corrupt, or be willing to be silent about the corruption (a “yes man”), to last there for very long. The deceit runs deep.
My best advice for prospective employees? Run! And if you’re a woman, SPRINT! Don’t be misled by appearances. The women there with leadership titles are leaders in name only. Everything a woman does has to be cross-checked, scrutinized and approved by one (or all) of the “Big Three” – the 3 men in charge. And each of the 3 male executives has their own story of dishonorable conduct (a crooked timeshare leasing deal, embezzlement, harassment). Yet they remain. But honest, hardworking women lose every time at MetaCoastal, especially if they have the audacity to ask reasonable questions or push for positive change. At least 6 (six!) women in leadership roles have left the company within the past year; they simply couldn’t tolerate the corrupt and condescending environment any longer. The misogyny in this company is just subtle enough to be overlooked at first glance; and frankly, I think the CEO lacks the self-awareness to even acknowledge it within himself. He is far too busy looking for others to blame for his problems.
Basic Math 101, Mr. Callahan: Always begin problem-solving by looking first at the common denominator. (Helpful hint: YOU!) It’s interesting that you speak a lot about accountability, but yet take no ownership of your starring role in your company’s problems.
