Great Role, Terrible Hours - Assistant Buyer NEXT Employee Review

Pros

The role itself is great, full of opportunities. Promotion takes a while but it is almost a promise when joining as a trainee so progression is there. I personally really got on with my line managers and floor managers. Once you have worked at Next, you’ll have no issue getting other job offers - it’s quite an impressive thing to have on your cv.

Cons

There is an ethos on the buying department of ‘if I sufffered when I was a trainee then you’ll suffer too’. I have seen trainees crying under the pressure. I left because it was a completely thankless job, you’d be expected to work 7:30-6/7pm with no lunch break. The employment contract states that you must work according to business demands which allows them to ask you to work all sorts of hours without a break. The vast majority of the people on the buying floor are lovely, but a few people made me dread coming into work. And don’t expect flexi time as a trainee/low level assistant - you have to be with the samples.

Hi there, thank you so much for leaving such a detailed review on your time as an assistant buyer at our head office. Because of the issues raised in this review we feel it is probably something that the HR team need to look into and investigate, as we would hate for future trainees and current employees to feel the same way. headoffice_HR@next.co.uk is the email address, any feedback is welcome and hugely appreciated.
