What's it like to work at Yelp - SRE Yelp Employee Review

Pros

* Change and progress are primarily driven by Engineers. If you have ideas and the drive to make them happen, you'll be happy here. It's remarkable how much, despite Yelp's size (engineering org is several hundred people), you can move the needle yourself. * The managing structure is light, managers don't get in your way and are sufficiently hands on to understand what you're working on. * The product itself is "ethically harmless". While I'd have qualms to work for certain tech companies, I feel generally safe at Yelp. Everybody is constantly reminded that users should be protected and their data is sacrosanct.

Cons

* The European branches (London, Hamburg) are fairly small, most of engineering works off San Francisco. Some people feel limited in the impact they can have in such a setting. Some people might have issues starting a bit late in the morning just so they can have late meetings with San Francisco in the evening. Other people might actually enjoy both things.

Pros

Collegial, collaborative work culture Remote-first culture (which has trade-offs for sure) Working on interesting problems Responsive leadership

Cons

I wish execs would prioritize regular team IRLs. They seem to be the first thing canceled whenever growth slows

Pros

If you love your city, it can be very fun. Remote work is helpful and you'll make great relationships with fellow community managers, who are typically wonderful people.

Cons

As others have said, upper management is extremely out of touch with reality, including the realities of small businesses post-COVID. Pay is very under market for the level of work. Values are consistently preached but only selectively honored.

Thanks for sharing your experience after spending so many years on our team. We agree that connecting with your city and working alongside wonderful fellow Community Managers are some of the best parts of the role. We're also glad remote work was helpful for you. Favoritism and gossip don't align with the environment we want to create. We want everyone to feel valued and supported as a person. We also want to uplift team members who want to explore roles in other departments. We have many amazing opportunities across Yelp, and we encourage people to pursue the work they care about most. Your feedback helps us grow, and we will share your notes with our leadership team so we can keep making Yelp a better place to work. Thanks for all your hard work over the years, and we wish you the very best in your next role.
