      Interesting and Exciting Non-Remote Workplace

Aug 11, 2022 - Software Developer in Verona, WI

      Pros

The people are great. Everyone I work with is friendly and helpful! As a software developer, the work is interesting and challenging. The roles that are less customer-facing (like software developers and quality managers) still get to interact with customers during immersion trips out to customer sites where we get to observe real people using the software and talk to them about what is and isn't working. I didn't really appreciate it until I went on my first immersion trip but after having been on one, I think that all software shops should consider incorporating immersion trips into their developers' jobs. The campus is beautiful and there is definitely a benefit to being able to talk a quick walk around to reset or give your mind a break. The food at the Verona headquarters is delicious and affordable. Epic is fairly well known, so if you ever need to leave Epic for one reason or another, you will still be very employable. Epic is a very large company with most of its staff in Verona, WI so if you don't like the team you are on, it's possible to request a team transfer (though obviously it's not guaranteed that a transfer will happen).

      Cons

Internal documentation isn't always the most up to date or easy to find. If you want to regularly work from home, this is not the place for you. As mentioned in the Pros section, Epic is a very large company. As much as the leadership would like a consistent experience throughout the company, Epic is a company made up of people, and people are different from each other. Some people mesh well and others don't, regardless of how good of a people they are. The quality of one's experience at Epic (and likely any company) will be heavily influenced by one's Team Lead and to a lesser extent one's coworkers. This is great if you have a great TL and coworkers (as I do), but can be problematic if you get placed under or alongside people who you don't mesh with as well. People on LinkedIn see that you work at Epic and flood you with requests regardless of whether you specify that you aren't looking for job opportunities. Seriously, if you get a job at Epic, consider deactivating your LinkedIn account.

      Good first job, poor career

      Jun 2, 2021 - Project Manager

      Pros

Young, Travel, Feedback culture, smart coworkers

      Cons

There's really no great recourse if you're unhappy with your TL or compensation, the ranking system that determines your pay/raises is opaque and quite political, more often than not if you're in a tough spot on a project their support is mostly just words and not actions

Implementation is a great first job that provides valuable experience for new graduates

      Pros

Great first job recent graduates looking to hit the ground running. You'll get really valuable work experience and a great salary to back up the long hours.

      Cons

This is a large company. They will take any hours you are willing to give them. While the culture is positive and people enjoy working here, it is easy to feel too responsible for your project and work many extra hours.

      Implementation Services - Project Manager

Oct 15, 2018 - IT Project Manager in Singapore

      Pros

Epic has given me the opportunity to travel the world and use my skills in IT and project management to have meaningful impact on healthcare. After starting at Epic, I was quickly able to become an expert in my field and have had the chance to participate in everything from software design to business decisions and executive customer relations. I have a high level of independence and autonomy in my work, every day is different from the last, and I am rewarded for my success both financially and in career opportunities. Epic brings in great people that work hard, play hard, are dedicated to their customers, and build strong teams together. It's one of their biggest strengths and probably my favorite part about the job.

      Cons

Epic is extremely dedicated to their customers' success, and this ultimately falls back on their own employees. When a client is at risk, misses deadlines, or just needs help to succeed, Epic folks will jump in to bail them out. This translates to the occasional late night at work or long trip for front line employees and management. I sometimes have a hard time seeing the long term plan from senior management. There are plenty of initiatives for improvement, next steps to tackle challenges, and events on the horizon, but what seems to be missing is a long term business plan for expansion into new markets, diversification of products and services, and strategic growth. This makes company activities feel reactionary rather than industry driving as Epic's size and market share justifies.

      Good job. Not for everyone.

      Jan 9, 2015 -

      Pros

Good pay and benefits aligns with high expectations. Compensation great as most new hires are generally under qualified recent grads.

      Cons

Need to be a self starter to get going anywhere and that works well for me. That doesn't work for everyone.

      Satisfying work; not a 9-5

Sep 21, 2022 - Technical Support Engineer in Verona, WI
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The work is satisfying and varied (I'm never bored), and the team is helpful and willing to come together to figure out solutions. It never feels like an imposition to ask for help, which is good since the problems are varied and complex. There is some degree of variability in the work you can do, outside of the core responsibility, meaning you can find your expert niche in areas you enjoy. Other pros include office spaces (no more than 2 people per office, you can decorate them, the break rooms are well supplied), the pay and benefits are great, Madison feels like the perfect balance of city and suburb (you can live downtown if you prefer that, or in the middle of nowhere if you prefer that), there are lots of events happening downtown if you enjoy that sort of thing. Also, it may seem silly to add this, but the fact that almost all the work parking lots are underground is absolutely marvelous for avoiding boiling hot cars in summer, frozen cars in winter, and 99% of the time you will find an open spot.

      Cons

As a salaried employee, there are no set hours and some weeks you will definitely be working more than others - this isn't going to be a regular 9-5. Be sure to set your boundaries early because this job will take as many hours as your willing to sink into it - there are always things to do and you will need to be ready to prioritize and say no to requests/projects if you are already busy. This isn't a great fit for a people pleaser who cannot say No. Other downsides include needing to live within 45 minutes of the work campus. Please be aware of this when looking housing (renting/buying), and that prices will be a higher within this radius since all Epic employees will be looking for housing in these areas as well. Make sure to find housing with a garage, if at all possible - I love snow but trying to unbury your car in the mornings gets old, especially if you have an 8am meeting! Finally, not a con, but a heads-up: be ready to be self-driven. You will be expected to be able to be proactive in searching for solutions, setting up meetings, and owning issues. You will always have someone to ask for advice or help, but it's hard to do well in this job if you're the type to sit back and wait for someone to tell you what you should be doing.
