Incompetent leaders

Pros

Remote working is a pro here

Cons

The leaders are disillusioned by their limited understanding of things. They think they own others and display an attitude backed by no logical arguments. The leaders of this company claims to be catering to english speaking expats but DO NOT even possess basic communication etiquettes of how people outside of Germany understand things. They think that everyone is as subjective and illogical as they are.

Unfortunately a normal Berlin startup culture

Pros

I don't want to talk too badly about the company, but I realized after our retreat that the company is very much a male-only space. I only work with men, so I only saw the issue when I saw how our other colleagues were treated

Cons

The company is only men other than customer service and a working student. During the retreat the women were treated poorly and were ignored at several points. My girlfriend pointed this out to me once, and now I am starting to see it here as well. When one of the women says something, she is ignored and spoken over. I have even noticed how some of my colleagues speak about the women when they aren't around.

We would like to thank you for your feedback and we’re sorry that you felt this way. This message has been eye-opening for us and while we knew that diversity had been an issue we failed to take the necessary actions. We have now started to change this. We’ve recruited a People person as part of our team. We’ve recruited some team members in the tech team that are part of underrepresented groups in tech. While we still have a way to go, we’ll be continuing our efforts in that regard. If you have some other piece of feedback or advice, do not hesitate to reach to ana@feather-insurance.com from People Ops.

Pros

The people who work at Feather are kind, smart, and create a fun work environment. There is a lot of flexibility to make suggestions, take on new, self-guided projects, and really build something from the ground up. The remote work policy is really great (you can travel and work from anywhere in Europe basically). The learning budget and home office benefit are really helpful.

Cons

Diversity is a big issue. The team is almost all men and they only seem to hire women into communications or customer service roles. Maybe fewer women apply for developer and data roles, but it's hard to believe they haven't found a single woman to fill an engineering position. Even some jobs that have more female applicants (e.g. design) seem to only be filled by men. At this point, the sea of male faces is probably scaring women off from applying. The company is bootstrapping, which is admirable. However, this also means that the salaries are nowhere close to industry standard, particularly for customer service/operations. This means it's hard to attract quality candidates across the board, and since it's mostly women being hired for those customer service/operations roles, this also perpetuates a cycle of gender-based salary inequity. There's also no HR to speak of, which means that hiring processes are always chaotic. Feather hires non-EU citizens but gives almost no support in arranging work permits or helping with relocation. It also puts people in the uncomfortable position of having to bring up any issue directly with one of the founders rather than going through HR.

We would like to thank you for your feedback! We couldn’t agree more with what has been said in terms of diversity. Since you’ve left we initiated a push in the direction of fixing this issue - we onboarded a People person and some more team members in the Product teams that happen to be part of an underrepresented group in tech. We’ve also adjusted our salary range to be more in line with what the market rate would be in Berlin. We are fully aware that in particular, the diversity issue requires continuous work, so if you have any further comments or ideas, please share them with ana@feather-insurance.com
