Pros

Can be a fun place to work if you fit into the organization. They have a nice office and are located in a semi-refurbished factory. The office can get loud at times, however there are options to work outside of the office. Possibility to make money with sliding scale commission. Lots of work related social events which are well planned. There is a social hour every Friday from 4-5. Good team support to accomplish goals from other employees.

Cons

If you don’t fit into the organization you will likely not be there long. There is a high turnover rate for an office of 8-13. For someone to thrive at this job they need to fit in socially. Social events are implied mandatory and come up semi regularly. The product offerings are often not competitive on price due to being a middle-man in a competitive industry. There can be a long sales cycle (6-8 weeks on average). Commission paid out on delivery of packaging, which in some cases can be 4-6 months after sale. Team direction needed to compensate for leadership, as often leadership is not in office.

Hello! Sarah here, the CEO at Georgette. Thanks for the positives you shared - I'm glad you like the office space and found the team supportive. I am working on adding more work zones to the office that are better insulated to keep things quiet, and we're developing strategies to make our open plan office a comfy and functional space for all to work. This is definitely a struggle for a lot of offices, and I really appreciate and work to implement all suggestions on making it as good as it can be, without having to put up loads of cubicles or move to an office that's lots of little rooms where we feel far more separated. I welcome working elsewhere in the building, and working remotely a portion of the time (we find it's good to be in the office a majority of the time so everybody can learn and collaborate, but we all need a day to focus and get stuff done once in a while! Me included. :) ) I am sorry us working together didn't work out after all. Cultural fit is critical on both sides -- for an employee, and for a company. The same goes for finding your happy place with respect to how your day is structured, the type of work you're doing, your purpose in doing it. There are so many amazing roles and organizations out there that I really think it's best to persevere until you find a great fit! :D I also want to address your specific comments. We used to pay commission when an order came in (rather than when it ships), but sometimes orders change or are cancelled, so it was logistically very tricky to keep track of. We pay commission when product ships, which is simultaneous with the time that the company can recognize the revenue too (so those are lined up). It's also easier for salespeople to run their own commission numbers this way. If somebody finances an order, our consultants are still paid as soon as the product ships, so we actually pay commission far before we are paid ourselves, in those cases. We're always looking for factories that can turn around product more quickly, but anything purchased from Asia takes a few months. I wish there were something we could do about that! For any other delay in an order, the salesperson has full ownership of the timeline. Sales cycle tends to go hand in hand with the value of a sale, and since our deals are a little bigger, it's normal that they take 1-2 months. People need time to make large spending decisions, and we do our best to be sensitive to that while keeping the project moving along at a healthy pace. Finally, you're right, packaging is definitely a competitive industry. :) We believe we offer far more than most packaging partners, for instance by making all our packaging carbon neutral. I will mention that the majority of companies who buy packaging work with a partner such as Georgette to help them with the process -- for instance, a good friend of mine buys for Walmart, and they do the same. As for socials, we have a regular hour on Friday afternoons (we finish work an hour early so that it's easy for everybody to come.) We do have an occasional event outside of that, such as our holiday dinner. I think it's nice for a small teams to have social events every once in a while, they're an enjoyable way to get to know the folks you spend your days with! Lastly, I'm glad you found the team helpful but of course am sorry you didn't find me around enough. 10-ish people is quite a lot for 1 person to manage, so I rely on our more senior folks to help me -- I want them to flourish and learn to manage folks, and help pass on their significant knowledge as well (which is often different from my own). I'm always available by phone for help if anybody needs it (evenings and weekends included). I'm typically in Toronto at meetings 1 day a week, and outside of that I make an occasional 3-5 day trip for a conference or to visit customers who are further afield. I do also sometimes go on vacation - we all need a refresher sometimes! :D We offer 3 weeks holiday to everybody so the rest of the team gets time to themselves as well! I wish you loads of luck with the next stage of your career, and am here to help in any way I can. :) I do hope you learned some good things while you were with us! Sarah

High stress but opportunity to learn lots

Pros

Great opportunity to wear many hats, try new things, discover and develop your strengths and weaknesses, think outside the box, have a hand in the bottom line success of the company, tight knit group of employees. Good short term stepping stone for the experience.

Cons

No room to grow. No mentorship, onboarding or training. Very high stress, competitive environment. Extreme pressure to consistently increase your workload and improve your quality of work. Long hours including an implied mandatory lunch break with your colleagues, talking about work and frequent off-hours gatherings where you talk more about work. Pressure to conform to founder’s standards, as an employee and as a person, and follow the cultural example she sets. Must enjoy networking and sales no matter what position you’re hired for. No real creative freedom. - it’s the founder’s way or no way. Minimum wage pay. If you make commission you can be well paid.

Hi there, Sarah (CEO) here! Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review and for the pros you outlined -- I'm glad to hear you did have some good experiences with us. I am sorry to read the remainder of your comments. As a small and ambitious company, we do work hard and have high standards -- and I understand that can be stressful. I'm afraid that's the nature of trying to get a business launched. I certainly wish it were easier myself. In terms of training, we don't have the structured training programs in place many larger organizations have. At our current scale, our work environment is best suited to those who crave independence and want to be part of the process-building - that's what building a startup is all about. As for coaching and mentoring, I always try to be available for any request for coaching or mentorship, including requests for external mentors. Our salaries are negotiated on a case by case basis; specifically for sales roles, we do plan for a large part of your take-home to be commission (in addition to your base). This is designed to allow a lot of freedom for our salespeople. We do have office hours of 8am-5pm with an hour lunch break from 12-1pm. Everybody is welcome to do as they wish during their lunch hour. Work challenges or anecdotes do come up during conversation at lunch or at socials - I think any team would say the same. I'm sorry we weren't able to work through these topics together while you were at Georgette, and find a positive outcome. I wish you lots of luck! Sarah

Pros

My favourite thing about working at Georgette Packaging is the team's ability to take feedback to heart. We are constantly improving and it truly feels like the entire team works together to better the company processes. I've never worked in a setting where change is implemented as quickly as it is here at Georgette. I joined during the COVID pandemic and the team was incredibly welcoming and accommodating in getting me trained and onboarded quickly. It's a small team that is very supportive - not just at work, but supports you in all aspects of your life! I'm so glad to have met this group of people. I have found opportunities to grow at Georgette. My superiors encourage me to go out of my comfort zone while providing the resources I need to do this! I'm so proud to work for Georgette and I feel so fortunate to have found this company. :)

Cons

I haven't experienced many negative aspects of working at Georgette Packaging. The office can get a bit loud, but that's what headphones are for! And I'd muuuch prefer that to a quiet, stuffy office. :)
