      Best place I've ever worked

      Pros

There is no company in tech that cares more about its employees than Glassdoor. The people that work here are truly kind and generous folks that work hard and are good at what they do. I feel respected, valued and grateful to be a part of the team. I like how the company doesn't just look to be competitive with benefits compared to other tech giants but they look to lead the industry in offering new and better benefits for everyone.

      Cons

I come from the startup world so there's a bit more process than I'm used to but it's not egregious by any means.

      Manager

Thanks for the feedback. I couldn't agree more that Glassdoor strives to look after our employees by providing competitive pay and benefits, interesting and purposeful work, and a great team environment made up of fun, smart, conscientious and diverse people. We try to balance process and nimbleness as a team and admittedly we are still getting better at it. As a past start-up founder myself, I love how quickly small and empowered teams can move and we want to encourage that at Glassdoor, when it makes sense. But our product is complex and we have hundreds of millions of users counting on our product which means we have to put in some process and systems as well. We also try to make sure we give our team members flexibility in when (unlimited PTO and parental leave), where (work from anywhere) and how they work, but we will definitely continue to evaluate our PTO and work week policies. - Andy Chen, Chief Product Officer

      Pros

You absolutely get out what you put in at Glassdoor. This is a company where I have been able to develop as an individual, build incredibly trusted relationships with my co-workers, and support my team in their own development. Leadership does their best to be as transparent with employees as possible, even when it's clearly the more difficult path. While there are always things that can be improved, joining Glassdoor has been the best decision I've made in my career.

      Cons

We have regular growing pains like there are at any other company. Historically we have been slow to innovate in certain parts of the business. As of late, it feels like we are heading in the right direction and have really exciting things ahead.

Great company but work can be very stressful

      1 Mar 2023 - Customer Success Manager

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Glassdoor offers quite a few benefits and one of them is being remote even though we have an office. You can be flexible with your working hours as long as your work is done. Great people and minds around with a lot of experience to share and learn from. Glassdoor is quite transparent with changes and what is going on in the business so that is always a plus.

      Cons

Sometimes feels like there is a lot of stress and pressure to overachieve as hitting your target is not enough for praise and job well done. At times there are things out of your control and you are told it is ok, it happens to anyone but then it will be brought up again in a way that you have not done your job and that it will reflect bad on your career. There are career opportunities internally for sure but in order to be promoted you have to tick so many boxes and those will only depend on your managers opinion. There is room for argument and questioning of the processes and feedback given to you but at the end, it is manager's way and no other way so you never win or feel like you are heard and listened to. In terms of feedback/performance reviews, the negative is always more highlighted than all the good that you have done.

      VP, Head of Customer Success

Thank you so much for your review and taking the time to provide us with your feedback. We’re so happy to hear that our commitment to allowing our teams to ""work from anywhere"" has been so beneficial to you. I'm so glad you see the value in our commitment to transparency. We feel those we work for and with are so critical to our business success, and we ensure to consider your thoughts and concerns when we make business decisions. I like that you also believe that Glassdoor has some of the best minds, talent, and experienced people in the business. I’ve been able to learn a lot from it as well. I can understand how stressful environments can often be demotivating and certainly sad to hear you experienced that here. Thank you so much for your critical feedback around your experience in our promo and employee review process. It is important to hear this feedback, as we want to ensure we can provide our employees with incredible career progression and open performance discussion. The CSM organization has developed comprehensive competencies that break out the skills/expertise needed across each level. I would encourage you to set up time with your manager on a monthly basis to review those competencies and come up with an action plan to drive progress. This can also be an opportunity for you to highlight your successes. This can act as a real time performance review document that your manager can leverage when writing your review in order to upkeep a transparent and collaborative process. If you experience any pushback from your manager in getting this scheduled, please feel free to connect with me. I'm happy to have a follow up with you if you're open to it so that I can support you, your growth, and overall satisfaction at Glassdoor. Good-hearted company that continues to evolve

19 May 2023 - Sales in San Francisco, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Our hiring process over the years has consistently been exceptional, resulting in the creation of something truly remarkable. I have formed lifelong friendships through Glassdoor. Even after 8 years, I still feel valued, challenged and grateful. The sales culture is strong, smart and gritty (and very lean). Like most places, we've gone through plenty of up and downs but there is no other group of people I'd want to experience this with. Our products are valuable and the comp plan has been motivating (however we do have some work to do this year). Our employee benefits are also best in class. One of the remarkable aspects of Glassdoor is that it encourages individuals to be their authentic selves. Through a variety of trainings and workshops focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, I have experienced significant personal growth. Glassdoor is not afraid to engage in difficult conversations, and this internal courage has helped me and others evolve into more well-rounded leaders who deeply value authenticity. In many ways, we have set the standard for how companies should demonstrate their commitment to their employees.

      Cons

Even after all these years, there are still many elements of our organization that feel like a start-up. In some ways, this is fun but in others, it can be wildly frustrating. While there are tremendous benefits to our partnership with Indeed, we've certainly taken a few steps backward with our processes (like billing/contracting, legal, etc.) Furthermore, many of us are confused about who is actually calling the shots when it comes to our selling motion. Its hard not think that we're losing control of the products and value prop that we played a huge part in building over these last few years.

      Pros

My co-workers were incredible people to work alongside, unfortunately that can be said about any place. At Glassdoor you feel like your helping and working towards a common goal of helping employees and would-be employees know whats happening behind the curtain at potential careers, again unfortunately Glassdoor has its own internal problems, bad managers, and integrity issues.

      Cons

Leadership has never handled layoffs well, you are constantly fearing for your job and those of your fellow co-workers. Sad because there was so much potential all those years ago I worked there, I’m so happy to be on the other-side, working for a company that truly makes a difference in this world. The same cannot and will not ever be said about Glassdoor.

      Chief Executive Officer

Thanks for taking the time to write a review of your experience working here at Glassdoor. I completely agree that we have inspiring and motivated people, who are passionate about our mission. I also appreciate your feedback on the areas for improvement and am sorry to hear you felt we could have done better with the recent layoffs. While our decision to reduce our workforce was incredibly difficult, it was necessary for us to sustainably operate the business through what we expect to be a prolonged period of weakness for our industry. Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m happy to hear that you’ve landed at a company that feels like the right fit for you and wish you the best in this next chapter. - Christian Sutherland-Wong, Chief Executive Officer

      Pros

      - the GTM co-workers are some of the best around - amazing remote-first culture, very inclusive and no micro-managing - You get to work with clients to instill real change at a company and industry level. it goes a long way in providing purpose to our jobs - very heavy focus on supporting DEI internally, which is AWESOME! - lots of opportunity to give feedback

      Cons

      - like most companies effected in the last 3 years, Glassdoor is grasping for a way to stay relevant in the market. Evolution and change is hard and the path forward hasn't been clear. - Pay is average at best. There has been a lot of changes to the compensation model in the last year with inadequate transparency around it. - Lots of turnover in mid to senior level management resulting in slow or halted progress internally - The partnership with Indeed is VERY messy and it often times feels as though Indeed is in the drivers seat for Glassdoor's future.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback and the details provided. I say this all the time, but getting this sort of insight from you & our team is invaluable! Admittedly, I have to agree that our colleagues in GTM are some of the best out there. We all put so much time and effort into our culture, inclusivity and making work meaningful, it's great to see folks feel the same. In regards to our close working relationship with Indeed: I hear you. I believe we've made some incredible improvements to how we partner (big shout out to our leaders, Ops Teams, etc.) -- but there is always room to get better. If you have ideas and suggestions around how we can be more transparent from the top down, please know my door is always open, I'd love to hear from you! - Brett Runyan, VP of GTM

      Pros

The people there are amazing and the office culture is really good as well. Management is also really good and actually care about you outside of work.

      Cons

Glassdoor has done layoffs twice in the last 3 years. I saw lots of amazing, hard working people leave that I thought would have never gotten laid off. I felt like my job was never secure there and I know a lot of others were feeling the same way. From the minute I joined I heard talks of layoffs for the 2nd time in 3 years. The partnership with Indeed is very frustrating and unorganized as well. It seems like Indeed is getting the better half of the partnership and Glassdoor is losing out on a lot of business. Glassdoor also doesn't pay nearly as much as other tech companies out there. This is across all tiers.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience working at Glassdoor. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the office culture and that leadership cared about you as an individual. I agree wholeheartedly that we have a talented employee base and it was heartbreaking to say goodbye to many of them recently. It’s important to me that we continue to prioritize our employees feeling supported, so thank you for sharing your perspective. I also appreciate your feedback about our partnership with Indeed. While I recognize it’s not without challenges, we believe that going to market with Indeed provides the best value to employers and ultimately job seekers. There seems to be some common themes around pain points and leadership at both companies are continuing to explore how we can improve our partnership to ensure that everyone’s needs and priorities are aligned. Thank you for being a part of Glassdoor and for the candid feedback. -Christian Sutherland-Wong, CEO

      An honest view of Glassdoor

21 Feb 2023 - Sr. Manager, Product Management in Seattle, WA
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Culture is like nothing I've experienced before. Co-workers truly assume good intentions, I haven't encountered any snarky or pretentious people. If you make a mistake nobody belittles you for it. - The mission is really important. Hiring seems broken everywhere, and Glassdoor is genuinely trying to fix it. -Benefits are quite good, with great health insurance family plans and wellness options like Classpass - Work life balance actually means something. I generally start and end my day at reasonable times and rarely need to work beyond that. Unlimited PTO and ability to actually use it is also great -Transparent leadership

      Cons

      - Many of Glassdoor's products do not work very well. Job matches in particular have been wonky for a long time and frustrating to use, especially compared to LinkedIn. - Strategic direction could be more clear - Smaller company so fewer lateral growth opportunities, although you can definitely get promoted

Appreciate the feedback! I agree the culture at Glassdoor is truly special and our teams are full of good people who care. Also, thanks for the feedback on product quality. You are right. The product has grown quickly and we have traded off quality in some areas. That is always a balance and we need to make sure core areas of the product meet the standards of our users or they will go somewhere else. Matching is an area of focus and investment this year and I'm confident accuracy will improve greatly. - Andy Chen, SVP, Product, CPO

Be Who You Are and Make a Difference

21 Apr 2023 - Enterprise Account Executive in Chicago, IL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

I've been at Glassdoor as an Enterprise Account Executive for just over a year now, and I have to say I don't think that I could ever work anywhere else. I've never seen such a genuine focus on transparency and accountability, and I feel empowered to be true to myself. When I first joined my manager told me that "Not everyone will be your type of person, but everyone is a really good person.", and I've come to find that to be true every single day. Anywhere you go there are always miscommunications and frustrations working across different departments and teams, but at the end of the day everyone is seen as a person rather than an obstacle or just a worker. I've never had a situation that I went into assuming best intent and with a genuine attitude where I ever felt that wasn't reciprocated and I wasn't treated with respect. I've made some really close friends working here, and they're some of the most incredible people I've met in my entire life. I'm pretty happy with the pay and benefits, and I'm always finding competitions or incentives that let you bring in some extra $$ outside of just your standard commission check. They approach this in a pretty fair way, and with how much pretty much every member of the sales org continues to succeed, there's very few cases where any rep doesn't make more than their OTE. Paternity leave, fully paid healthcare premiums with a large HSA contribution that's almost as much as my deductible, and a really generous disability leave make me feel incredibly supported and valued. I feel a strong culture of innovation and striving to be better, while at the same time realizing that work is just one part of life. I've had some pretty serious health issues that have been challenging over the past few years, and for the first time I feel incredibly supported and enabled to grow and overachieve despite this. I've also found an incredible focus on career development as well as working on yourself personally and professionally. There's a huge focus on internal promotion and growth, and I'm excited for where things will be at 5 years from now. The last piece that I'll touch on is our amazing senior management. Whether it's the VP of sales being genuinely excited to see you and congratulating you on your last quarter, or someone on the C-suite sharing where we're headed over the next 5 years and carefully considering your questions, I feel incredibly inspired and honored to be a part of the team. Glassdoor is on a mission to do good in the world, and I truly feel like what I'm doing is making a difference.

      Cons

You'll find in nearly any sales organization that there are some administrative restrictions and niche ways that sales/quotas are set up, and Glassdoor is no exception. There are more than a few things that you have to get used to, but the grace and support of everyone that you're working with doesn't make it seem like a big deal.

VP of Sales and Customer Success

Thank you for taking the time to provide such thoughtful feedback. Hearing that you feel empowered to be your true self makes me so happy. It’s the people and the culture of Glassdoor that truly set us apart and your experience validates our path. We do work hard to find and be good people and though imperfect, strive to give and be our best. Thanks for recognizing this. When I joined Glassdoor some years ago, I was surprised by the level of transparency. It was unlike any company I’d experienced. In fact, it took me a while to acclimate. It can be challenging to work in a company committed to transparency and accountability. Your successes and failures may be side-by-side for all to see. But I learned that we embrace a growth mindset and have permission to make and learn from mistakes. What freedom! It makes us better. Well, it certainly makes me better. Thank you for sharing how we’ve supported your health journey and that our benefits are meeting your needs. --And what a gift to find incredibly talented peers to call friends. There’s nothing better than working at a place with colleagues that you genuinely enjoy. We’re fortunate to have you on our Sales Team! Your attitude is an inspiration. Thank you again for the kind words and the honest feedback around quota. We’ll keep working on this until we get to a win/win/win place. Until then, thank you for working hard for Glassdoor, for shining a light on our amazing team, and for being authentically you. Val Roush, VP of Sales and Customer Success
