Disappointing

Pros

You get to work with new teams that are passionate and have a ton of energy coming in the door. There are occasional cool projects that come through

Cons

I think the other recent reviews do a lot of justice here but heres a quick take. I would not recommend working here right now with the current creative leadership. Despite what you're told, you more than likely will be stuck doing production work on nights and weekends and come out with nothing valuable learned or added to your portfolio. Communication is dismal, the room is littered with whispers and gossip. The Leadership will sell you at first on a whole story of "building" and "working towards" something but it has been a few years since he started and the place has only gotten worse. Everyone has a different experience places and reviews can be a bit subjective but 100% of the people that worked there when I started have left both voluntarily and involuntarily for very negative reasons. There is a cycle of turn overs every year or so. Your job security is dependent on the clients they have in the door and during slow season theres a good chance you will get laid off. I saw many people fired/ let go for questionable reasons and all of those job endings were swept under the rug. I don't think the company will do well because no one wants to work there once they get a feel for the place. It doesn't take people a long time to figure out that good designers don't always make good leaders.

ICON is deeply troubled by the experience described in this review. For over 35 years, we've always worked to maintain an open, inclusive, and enjoyable work environment where talented creatives come to learn and do great work. Cultivating a healthy work/life balance is part of that equation, and it's something our leadership encourages and supports at all levels.

Pros

The only true pro is some of the employees are/were great people. The pay is decent as well as the benefits. Not much else beyond that.

Cons

To be as honest as I can with you, I'm going to cut straight to it. ICON is not a good place to work and only worth the move if it's your last or only option. If you seek a place where you want to grow efficiently, have the chance to do great work backed by a solid and proven process, professionally organized, structured proficiently, and believes in the power of a healthy culture (or at least on its way to those things) this place is not it. Nor is it set up well to achieve them in the near future. Don't let ICON's website fool you…it has been through so much transition in the past couple years that top leadership is poor, operationally it's a mess (there is little to no structure), the type of clients you see on the site are few and far between (only a small handful of accounts), and culturally it's very dry. It was surely a huge disappointment as I was initially sold into believing different. Beware if they sell you the same. Honestly, I'm not sure if senior management fully cares or understand how to really lead an agency successfully across the board. They turn a blind eye to the vision, mission and direction of the agency and put little to no focus on those important attributes. As a result, employees are left with weak, uninspiring and inexpressible visions of the company's future, with communication about the overall direction of the agency being extremely poor. While there were a couple small victories, most things take a backseat as most weeks feel like an uphill battle just to get through the work and the messy organization of things. Even after others have sat down with leadership to voice frustrations, concerns and opinions, and truly wanting/trying to establish healthy ways to institute a great environment nothing ever comes from it. The team is ever evolving as they have a difficult time holding onto anyone because of these issues. Unfortunately, ICON operates on a day to day mindset without solid plans for the future, the overall work, it's processes, gaining new clients, and the general growth and morale of the team. Frankly, there are many attributes here that I could continue to list, but I’m sure you’re getting the picture by now. The frustrations definitely out way the very few benefits. Good luck!

ICON leadership is deeply pained by the conditions described in this review, and we refute them completely. As a small business, for nearly 40 years we've strived to create an environment in which everyone is equally respected. We're proud of our culture—one that honors each person's unique talents, and that allows for individual growth and creative opportunity. That's the culture we'll continue to cultivate now and in the future.
