What you make it.

Pros

This job is a lifestyle, not a regular shift work job unless you have seniority to hold a regular schedule. It’s pretty laid back in my area but rail road life is demanding. They pay in you a 4 step rate pay program which is outdated. After training you earn 80% of full pay rate 2 years, 85% 1 year. 90% 1 year. Then 100%. All crafts are like this. It’s full of miserable people who complain about how awful everything is. The pay is pretty good considering the work load. I have worked twice as hard to earn a portion of what I earn now doing this job. You can only work 12 hours a day, OT daily at 8 hours.

Cons

Depending on how busy your terminal is you will work on call for maybe a few years. It’s 24/7 all weather, holidays. If you like weekends off and sleeping in or only working day shift.. don’t even bother. The company has issued a lot of dumbed down rules to accommodate what seems the younger generation can handle, then discipline the experienced guys for not doing the dumb rule.. like pointing out the window at signals. You can either do some efficient productive railroading or you can follow a checklist of rules and metrics. Can’t do both. NS is a corporation. You’re local peers And managers might care about you on some level but ultimately you are a number and necessary liability to the company. The amount of crying by grown adults about how terrible their life is because of the job but yet refuse to do anything but complain.

Pros

Worked with great management and leadership. Development program was great as well and there were opportunities to move internal if needed and you fit.

Cons

Long days but could be rewarding. They unfortunately moved from our city and many were forced to lose their jobs or move to a new location that was in a larger market for lower pay in those markets.

Pros

Pay, Retirement, Benefits. That is all.

Cons

No one seems to care about you at all. When I arrived at my location, my point of contact for my job location was nowhere to be found, EVER. His office would be vacant for most of the day. You call him? No answer. You text him? He might answer hours later. With the few conversations I had with him over the phone, he would just let me come into work and leave work whenever I wanted and work whatever days I wanted. Don't get me wrong, that does sound very nice, but when you have limited time to learn everything before you are thrown into the deep end it only hurts you in the end to not spend a proficient amount of time on the job learning everything. You don't really do much in training. The most you will do is sit beside someone in the tower while they do data entry for 12 hours, along with answering a million phone calls. Then, another day you will be in the field driving in circles for 12 hours around the yard taking crews to and from their train. The work/life balance is also bad. You will work a minimum of 12 hours a day. This number can increase depending on the day. Sometimes you will be working during the day, sometimes you will be working overnight.

Pros

Health options are fair. Pay isn't bad for the work.

Cons

Constant on call rather than set hours. Dog-eat-dog mentality among workers seeking better conditions in work slots. Seniority based so very little upward movement over time.

Pros

Pay is excellent, with plenty of overtime opportunities. Health insurance is great, especially for families as dependents are no additional cost.

Cons

Expected to be on-call after hours throughout the week, and rotating mandatory on-call status every other weekend. Flexibility depends on adjoining maintainers and supervisor. No work-life balance, long hours. Safety is preached, but company goes through spells of not wanting to spend on proper tools or materials. High stress environment. Liability nightmare with grade crossings.
