Pros
Snacks, perks, casual tech company environment. Big investment from VW
Cons
Fake company culture, if you don't click you're out. Workplace is very political, departments often clash against each other. Some internal turmoil that isn't made clear to employees. Unclear communication. Very few people with personality, talent & compassion. Depending on the team, can get away with coasting as long as you "look" like you're doing work or you go unnoticed. Especially folks who belong to the pre-VW era; not helpful, lazy, streaming while at work, not very compassionate. This one embittered head of department has an immature managerial style although they've been in the company for years and should know better. Very fake and negative environment. Their lack of communication is tremendous and they're verbally abusive. Felt defeated working there, all talk (says one thing and doesn't deliver).
Pros
- Actively working towards a future tech stack in AWS, and lofty goals for small to medium sized growth. - Engineering Managers are technically very smart and often take on-call responsibility for the team - Financial backing from Volkswagon - CEO clearly letting us know that money is not an issue for anything that will help us be successful - Pay is above average for Vancouver - Flexible work/life balance - Fairly good development best practices - Great brand, worldwide footprint - Politics are surprisingly not too much of an issue
Cons
- Monolithic Oracle Database :( blocking a lot of - Lack of deliberate mentorship/coaching - Too much information in the hands of few - Generally understaffed (mainly because of the lacklustre talent pool in Vancouver) - Apathy towards proactively fixing issues with a sense of urgency, can be elitist at times - Extreme administrative overhead (things take a long time to complete) due to non-scalable architecture, reliance on tribal knowledge, little or no documentation and process. - Communication in general is poor
Pros
There are some cool people with great personality and talents. You just need to talk to them long enough to find out.
Cons
Workplace can be very political. Departments often clash against each other. Some internal turmoil that isn't made clear to employees. Unclear communication.
Pros
Good location; free snacks/drinks; so-so benefits plan; some nice people.
Cons
The average star rating of reviews for this company is 4+. I suspect a lot of these 4+ reviews are fake, written by the People & Culture team to over-inflate the "awesomeness" of this company. It is not awesome by any stretch if you come from a background where professionalism and experience count in spades. This company has been around a long time. Unfortunately, so too has the start-up mentality culture it clings to, for a number of years now. If you like start-ups and the chaotic hyperbole they spin to disguise themselves as techie-cool, you'll thrive in this environment. If you come from a professional background where skills and experience are highly valued and nurtured, and order exists, do not join this company. It's all bling from the outside, but closer inspection reveals a poorly managed, poorly staffed company that is sorely lacking in experienced, skilled personnel. The results are no processes whatsoever, no decent training (just thrown in the deep end and expected to swim), no leadership, poor communication, and "managers" elevated to such positions with zero experience or formal training in that arena. This creates for endless frustration, poorly made decisions, bad hiring for the sake of hiring, and ineptitude. Lots of push-back from managers who haven't the slightest idea how to execute on their title or lead. Looks good on the resume, but in practicality, useless. A clicky environment where drinking from the kool-aid is your ticket to a great ride. Voices are raised to offer improvements to workflow, but the silence is deafening. Huge staff turnover, either by firing, resignation, or layoff. Staff retention of skills and experience is dismal. The average tenure is one to two years. The company offers a cool product. Unfortunately, the staff and leaders nurturing this product to beyond cool do not have the collective knowledge and experience to rise to the occasion.
Pros
The company as a whole is fine. Great people. Great leadership from Andy the CEO. Its easy to fall in love with the product and believe in being part of it.
Cons
It was an absolute revolving door for accounting staff. They've had three Controllers and two Directors of Finance in the last two years alone. There's also been an innumerable number of Accounting Assistants and Contractors who have come and gone. (Look on Linkedin) Why does everyone leave? There are unrealistic expectations and demands of people -- excessive overtime, lack of resources and toxic communication and treatment toward subordinates. One of my colleagues even complained to People and Culture about the treatment they were getting from a higher up on the finance team, of course nothing was done. More proof? Call up Swim Recruiting and other major recruiting agencies in this town and ask why they will no longer place staff there or what they're heard about the Finance environment there.
Pros
- Free snacks - Many opportunities to engage with office politics (if that's what you want) - Targets above-average pay - Lots of people challenges - Emphasis on people (although sometimes pretentious) - Top management (C suite) have their hearts in the right place - Very corporate - Good looking culture/values on paper - Good commercial team keeping the show going
Cons
- Staying in your comfort zone is encouraged - Very corporate - Incompetent management - Lack of technical talent, and/or recognition of good technical talent - No room to grow / corners are heavily guarded - Bad organizational structure hence terrible communication - Terrible culture at practice - Terrible engineering practices that are led by copy cats - Terrible technical architectural direction
Pros
Despite sounding like it could be boring to work in the parking industry, it ended up being one of the most interesting industries to learn about. There was a lot to learn and many intricacies you never think about. Your main clients are district councils, which was always interesting to communicate with. Working here made me not super surprised at the handforth parish council meme that popped up in 2020 (okay maybe not that bad, but sometimes there's similarities) Working on content that goes out to local areas, as well as their meters for trees initiative made me feel like I was genuinely making a difference. Part of my role included lots of travelling, which was super unique in a job and I really miss it sometimes. The people working here are incredible. There is a good diversity in age and the conversations were always amazing. During the pandemic, the communication was still strong, and zoom calls were never ever quiet and felt exactly as it is when physical. Everyone around you are super supportive and tons of fun. There isn't a single person that I didn't get along with. Whether you're moving jobs or starting a new career, there's a lot of opportunity here.
Cons
The salary discussions are difficult here. For the amount of work I'm doing and the ROI I was creating, that salary is around 35,000k. Initially my role was very simple but I had a ton of new responsibilities. Despite good growth and prospects in Paybyphone usage through the pandemic, and working through it entirely, I was congratulated with a 1k payrise, which was slightly below inflation rates. Of course, this isn't a role in London so I can understand it, but it didn't change me at all. Because of the location and the distance of some employees commute, any socials are slim. There isn't a ton of pub outings, but the socials that do happen are very fun. It just doesn't happen very often.
