Nice place but lots of cracks with managers and the People team

      18 Dec 2019 - Anonymous Employee
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Nice environment, decent perks, good work/life balance

      Cons

It's challenging to manage at Pinterest. There is constant change on the people team where new processes, definitions, roles, projects are constantly being pushed down the manager's throats without much explanation to why the change is better. The perf cycle changes this time around is yet another change we have to deliver as managers and manage unnecessary turnover The People team have not developed effective manager trainings to really build this capability at the company and as a result, there are poorly trained, underqualified leaders running many critical teams.

      Pros

Compensation and benefits: Pinterest offers competitive salaries and benefits, including health insurance, 401(k) with company match, and paid time off. Work-life balance: Pinterest is known for its strong work-life balance. Employees are encouraged to take time off and to focus on their personal lives. Culture: Pinterest has a positive and collaborative culture. Employees are encouraged to share ideas and to help each other succeed. Opportunities for growth: Pinterest is a fast-growing company, which means that there are many opportunities for employees to grow and develop their careers.

      Cons

Competition: Pinterest is a competitive company, which can be stressful for some employees. Work-life balance: While Pinterest is known for its strong work-life balance, some employees may find that they need to work long hours to meet deadlines. Location: Pinterest is headquartered in San Francisco, which is a high-cost city. Culture: Pinterest's culture may not be a good fit for everyone. Some employees may find it too casual or too focused on collaboration.

      Pros

Really wonderful people. Awesome projects. Work from anywhere. Competitive pay. Great work life balance. Trying to be the wonderful place on the internet. A lot of understanding and compassion.

      Cons

A lot of restructuring which can feel intense and confusing (It is all necessary given the global economic changes, and most likely this is the case for most companies). Not great training programs for people or management. Tough to move to other departments.

      Pros

The perks of being in a Silicon Valley/SF Bay Area tech startup office. Food, beverages, etc. That's about it.

      Cons

Even during the salary negotiating, post-interview period, one could already tell that this is a company run by disingenuous, superficial people. During my time here, I dealt with inept middle management typical of traditional tech startups where "openness" is merely paid lip service. Everyone was obsessed with what they did prior to joining this company, at Facebook, Google, etc., instead of looking forward or using the actual creativity they purport to espouse. As well, one has to suffer through the usual self-congratulatory attitude, a profound lack of self-awareness, and shallowness of these so-called liberal, progressive types in tech who are never challenged on their actual beliefs. I had three different managers during my time here and each one was as tone-deaf and ineffectual as the last. The most disgusting part was maybe the casual racism. It's not an issue particular to Pinterest, but perhaps society as a whole, but when the entire company is majority cis-gendered, straight, White men, then you can guess the ingrained ignorance involved. These people are very calculated; just be aware of that. No one stays long. You can do better than working for a company whose main product is a repackaged Google image search. The real genius is how they sell people "creativity" through IP infringement. Nothing better exemplifies the surface level, vapid nature of these people.
