Pros

Remote working was available to me which was very helpful. Manchester office is pleasant and a nice place to work.

Cons

In my experience:- Average salaries. Non-existent bonus. Payroll function is a shambles with frequent non-payment or payment of wrong amount. Poor management. Promotions Board is a sham and is nothing more than a PR exercise. No strategic direction - The equity partnership and CEO seem devoid of ...well, anything. Crisis mode 24/7. Too many egos in positions of 'authority'...i.e. most managers think they're the most clever, important person in the room which leads to no knowledge sharing, no interest in others' points of view and therefore no progress is made. Don't expect any career progression as no one actually cares or wants to help their colleagues develop. The talent that is there is being wasted due to all of the above. Company performance and stability looks awful...and from an insider's view, it's not hard to see why.

Pros

SM is a law firm which is approaching not only legal services but the way we provide them differently. SM actively encourages open and flexible working, they fully support and encourage a healthy work life balance and making your working hours fit around your home life. SM has a great package for colleagues which includes fair basic salaries, coupled with bonus packages for everyone (not just fee earners!), ad hoc incentive schemes, salary reviews, higher than average holidays and pension contributions, life assurance and private healthcare.

Cons

SM has been through a lot of change in the last couple of years, this is still evident. SM are working hard on improvements but it will take time and there will always be room for improvement.

Pros

The firm is very friendly and all members of the firm that I have encountered during my time here are approachable. To me, it seems that there is a commitment to career development at this firm with managers taking an interest in the aspirations of colleagues. The firm shares its plans with colleagues in regular meetings and updates and is very open in terms of what it hopes to achieve and encourages staff at all levels to get involved in how we can best achieve it. Having worked at several law firms previously, I have not come across a firm as open with it's staff as this one. This firm actually seems to listen to it's staff and there seems to be a real drive to move the firm forward.

Cons

There has been a lot of change at this firm over the past 12 months. Understandably, this means that the firm is having to settle in to new systems and processes with new members of staff, which takes time.
