Pros
- Interesting product, millions of users. Access to a lot of usage data that lets you run AB tests and try out potential features on a whim. - Has some of the most talented and caring people (especially in the lower ranks) that you can find. This is getting lost, sadly since they end up leaving or even fired. - Unlimited holidays, although people are taking only the old amount + 4 or 5 more because they fear this will play against them in the future when promotion time comes.
Cons
- Politics are here to stay. It used to be different but now everyone only cares about themselves and not about making things happen. This behavior is encouraged by the company itself (the upper management) by hiring more and more "Heads of X" and bringing their acquaintances from their past companies putting them in made-up positions that have not proven any value months after their hiring. - Communication has gone out the door. Things happen in secret first and are communicated in shady ways (for example firings get announced through email when no one uses it instead of Slack, and promotions (especially for managers) get reported through Slack instead). Also, it is worth mentioning that a month has gone by since 22 people were laid off and there has been no official announcement from the company in order to cover it up. - Management is not held accountable. The layoffs happened because of a lack of growth but none of the Senior Leadership Team got affected by it, some even got promotions. During 2022, a lot of top-down decisions were made but the people that ended up paying the price are in the lower ranks. - Diversity. 3 hubs (originally Zurich, then Belgrade, now Barcelona) but now they only hire engineers where is cheaper (Serbia), without taking into consideration if everyone on the team they are hiring for is in one location. The same goes for Marketing and Barcelona, at least all the people are getting hired there. - People do not care. And the people that care are not part of the decision-making process even if the company could benefit from that. Your job title (if you are not an Individual Contributor) and how your manager perceives you are the most important thing for 95% of the people in the company. The once-great Smallpdf culture is lost.
