Uninspiring

Pros

There is lunch every Monday catered. Bathroom is close, just outside across the hallway. There is also a game room.

Cons

It's quite shocking to me how upper management can chastise people so easily around here - not fun. In terms of performance, they expect employees to deliver, but have no accountability for their own performance. Given the above, it's quite uninspiring to be working here, especially when they're not all that competent for the title/roles they have.

We regret that you had a negative experience at Stellar. Our goal is to create a productive, fun and stimulating work environment. I personally apologize and we appreciate the time you took to provide your thoughts openly. Yes, we have challenges, but early stage startups often experience changes in direction, and some level of uncertainty. Since you left the company we have made significant strides forward including the following. - We have a well developed strategy to engage operators and corporate flight departments with value added tools. - We have a development partnership with Rockwell Collins which has cemented our strategy and roadmap. - We have a new board of directors, including Dean Donovan and Dave Siegel, with deep industry expertise and an appropriate executive management structure and governance to ensure adherence to the plan. - We have a very strong recruiting plan to bring in top talent, positively influence the team, and grow the company. The evidence of this progress is our recent close of a large Series A round with top tier institutional investors and industry experts. Regards, Tim O'Brien

Pros

Great group of very experienced people to work with and learn from. Our goal is to change how an industry works, which requires solving tough and fun problems. We are building our engineering stack from ground up using the latest and greatest technologies. We have strong business relationships with a variety of key companies in the industry. There has been real and noticeable improvements recently in how the company functions at the highest levels.

Cons

We moved our office from downtown Palo Alto to an office park in Redwood City. However, we plan to move to SOMA sometime within the next few months.

The Truth

Pros

Wow. Looks like there's a lot of propaganda and rating manipulation going on here from both sides. You can see it in the timing patterns of reviews and responses so let me give you the truth. The company has a tumultuous history, but that means lots of opportunity to come in and try to create positive change. Emphasis on "try" because many others have tried and been unsuccessful in the past. You'll get to take on lots of projects and practically have a green field experience. Most of the people here are awesome and what is being built is game-changing.

Cons

Pros aside, there's high turnover here for a reason (even in management where we're on our 2nd CEO and 3rd VPE in just over 2 years. Leadership and management hasn't been the best. A lot of time has been spent on fundraising and not enough time has been spent on building a good company with regards to focusing our attention on a specific piece of the market, improving corporate culture, and generally managing and taking care of employees. Unfortunate, but props to them for making sure not a single payroll has been missed. However, there's still a lack of best practices in place, consistent management/treatment of employees, and not enough results from the work we've done. Morale is low and there's also still some sting from the last round of layoffs. Along the way we've had toxic, unprofessional employees who yell, treat others poorly, and/or underperform and most are gone, but not all. That's the reason for a fair number of departures here and it feeds into our problems with securing talent. Managers want something different than the team and typically goes after personal wants rather than corporate needs. Most of our hires used to come from referrals. Now you'd be hard pressed to find people here that are willing to refer their friends and family even after we implemented a referral payout program.

Lowest point of my career

Pros

Met some great people and thankful to still call them my friends.

Cons

Is Stellar still around? If so, I cannot in good conscience recommend working here. It started out as an interesting concept but the leaders were constantly changing direction, the ideas were all over the place. Unfortunately Stellar lacked the talent, tech and traction within the industry to go anywhere.

Thank you for your input. David Fox CEO responses: 1. Yes, Stellar is not just around, but experiencing growth and positive change as we build the team who will change this industry in months and years to come. We announced via press release two months ago where we raised a $26.3m Series A from some of the largest and most astute investors in the world. 2. Yes, we've pivoted as many start ups do to find the right product market fit and partnerships which is what led to our Series A investment. Good leadership tends to find a way to make things happen, raise money to build the business (think talent acquisition/recruiting), and find the right strategic partners to accelerate growth. With this round of funding we've been able to attract top talent and are very excited about the future of the company. 3. I'm very confident we can run Stellar effectively and have appropriate back grounds for success. Here is our leadership background: My family background in aviation dates back 3 generations to 1934 and I have been CEO of 2 other successful technology companies. My co-founding partner Paul Touw, founded XoJet (the largest operator in the country) and founded Ariba.. Our Lead investors CEP led Bain's Aviation practice and founded Volaris Airlines, now publicly traded. Our other Board members, Dave Siegel, ran Frontier Airlines, US Airways, Avis. Shawn Vick is the CEO of Global Jet Capital, funded in part by Carlyle who has one of the largest Aerospace PE funds in existence. So, I certainly think we've got some teammates around the table that have done some stuff in tech and aviation in their careers. Best of luck to you in the future. I hope you find a place that truly makes you happy. Life is too short.

Pros

- Founders, top management and the board are industry veterans and have a unique insight into the industry. - Challenging problems to solve, top-of-the-tier tech stack. - Collaborative development process, everyone learns from everyone else. - Many opportunities for career growth, you can set your own goals and work towards them. - Suggestions for improvement are well received and legitimate ones are addressed effectively. - Smart, fun people working towards a common goal - Exec team is making a conscious effort to improve communication and transparency across the company.

Cons

Like any small startup, sometimes things change very quickly in some areas and other times not fast enough. This is being addressed, the company is a lot more focused and has clear deliverables for all teams, including the executive team.
