Toxic Creative Leads

Pros

The company offers big brands that you can work on, pretty good exposure.

Cons

The brands that they work with don't necessarily let them work on major projects, more of the minor social media campaigns. Other brands do but not necessarily a lot. This is because the creative team isn't strong. A senior or two does provide guidance but it's a risk because the remaining seniors either do not have the communication skills to tell you what you need to improve on or they humiliate you. Humiliation is performed for others in the office to see. The CEO himself is on a separate level, he does not provide creative inputs but tends to give unconstructive feedback such as "ewww." I didn't think an adult would be so incapable of providing feedback or leading a team.

Pros

Few talented and genuinely nice people

Cons

You will not be treated nicely and will be spoken to in a rude and condescending manner at times by the senior level creatives. Top down bullying and humiliating seems to be the modus operandi of the agency and you are treated and spoken to differently simply based on how much they like you. If you do not stand up for yourself, be prepared to be shouted at and bear the brunt of unprofessional behaviour in the workplace. Accounts servicing is a mess and basic things like briefs are not written clearly and important assets are not given in time for the creatives to work on efficiently. When things go wrong and deadlines are missed, finger pointing ensues. The accounts servicing team is not experienced enough to handle difficult clients and work is therefore bounced back and forth with art having to create multiple alternatives and variations, wasting time that can be put to better use. The agency might as well be just suits and a studio since creatives are not really given much creative freedom and the culture does not allow for a safe space to share ideas. While working a little later at times may be normal in the industry, account executives cannot seem to respect the time of others and will not hesitate to send emails late into the night and will ask for unreasonable timelines for work to be done. There is little to no growth to be had as the turnover rate is horrendously high. Effective learning and mentorship unfortunately does not happen as a result of that. Talented seniors passionate in making a difference in the agency are seen as troublemakers and problematic. Morale is low as so many come and go. Management is unfortunately too proud to see all the issues and appear to be unwilling to try and understand reasons that people are leaving. The agency also coddles unprofessional behaviour and allows for incompetent leaders with inflated egos to steer the already sinking ship and ironically lets the actual talents go.

A sad future for their tomorrow

Pros

Great colleagues who want do great work together even if there are sometimes disagreements. The creatives also look out for each other and offer help when they can. The agency has a few great accounts that would look good in your book and most are given the chance to work on the campaigns and pitches. Senior team members also do their best to help juniors and improve their skills. Working together is generally fun until the MD forces his ideas on people.

Cons

The MD always claims that the agency is about its people but the people are the last thing he invest in. Paying their salaries is not an investment ok? Almost everyone is spoken to like they are dumb or that their opinions do not matter. The environment is generally not a safe or nurturing one because you never know when you would be thrown under the bus by the account servicing team. And we're not even talking about how you're just supposed to know how to do the work even without a proper brief or having the right experience for it. The account servicing team is another problem. They don't give you the right information, create gossip and add to the toxic culture. The agency is led by one voice, one that only listens to itself and refuses to move with the times. This is something that the account servicing team seems to be happy working with as it works very well for them even as the good creatives seem to be continuously leaving.
