Pros

Business seems to be improving. More opportunities have been created with outsourcing. I was promoted to an engineering manager after waiting almost two years so was good for me. Some of the older people who have been at Very for a long time have been very negative. With the outsourcing that has changed with more positive people being promoted into roles as those people have left. Benefits are pretty good. Able to buy holidays and flexible benefits has a good selection. Tech Leadership seem to genuinely care and I feel supported. There is more transparency about things happening and about the business from the CTO. Getting to work on some newer things whereas in the past I was stuck in one place.

Cons

So much work and expectation from the business leadership team without the appreciation to the tech team. Lots of pressure to deliver. Salaries not in line with other companies. Still low in comparison. Working in the office is now mandatory for a few days of the week. Would like the option to work at home fully sometimes. Appreciation of Tech doesn’t seems to come from the senior leadership team of the business. Communications are always about the latest adverts and marketing teams.

Pros

Hybrid working Udemy business Staff discount Lovely office

Cons

There’s so many changes in priorities which leads to work being start/stopped then revisited. Bad behaviours of people aren’t dealt with appropriately. People who go beyond their roles and responsibilities doing engineering work and not keeping people updated which causes a lot of issues. Software engineers are treated like 2nd class citizens in some areas. Too many cliques. Engineering is always involved at the end of design phases and expected to just be code monkeys & firefight prod issues. Contractor BA’s given the title “tech lead” not understanding their role and responsibilities which aren’t clearly defined and they are doing work which doesn’t fall under their remit. They write essay tickets and expect engineers to just get on with work and not ask questions. Software engineers careers are hampered in certain areas due to bad behaving people making wrong decisions/setting them up for failure. Unfortunately so many people are in the wrong roles and have no clue on what to do. This doesn’t reflect all areas of the business.
