Great Resume Builder, but Disorganized Managers Make WEBTOON a Nightmare Employer
Pros
1. The entry-level and mid-level employees are incredibly talented, perceptive, and driven. There's a lot you can learn from them and good friendships to be made, if you can carve out time for that. 2. You'll have an abundance of opportunities to get a lot of industry experience very quickly. 3. 95% of the time, there's little to no micromanagement. If you get on management's bad side or it's time for annual reviews? That's a different story and likely varies a lot by team. My experience was not positive. 4. A great place to get 2 - 3 years experience for folks who like high-intensity work and are self-motivated. 5. Benefits are pretty good! 6. You'll certainly never be bored.
Cons
1. Talented folks were often hired over rather than promoting from within. 2. There are many managers who you're just going to have to work around. "Managing up" is a big thing at WEBTOON because most managers don't have the bandwidth to manage you. This is normalized and any complaints about this will fall on (metaphonrically) deaf ears. 3. Lack of mentorship. 4. Unless you have a high tolerance for fast-paced work environments (imagine if finals week was EVERY week), then expect to be emotionally fatigued. Boundaries are your key to survival, but be careful not to make them too obvious or management may start to view you unfavorably. 4. Related to the above, don't expect upper management or the CEO to truly care if you're burnt out and need some work taken off your plate. They may sympathize and make promises, but I wouldn't hold your breath. 5. Lack of interdepartmental communication (or communication and planning in general) makes things feel chronically chaotic. If you want stability you have to make it for yourself. 6. Again, communication isn't great. So if you choose to work here, I recommend using e-mails for any important communications so you have an easy record to reference for potential future disputes. If you need to clarify something important with your manager --> get it in writing. I've been talked around in circles on so many video calls, I could scream. 7. If you get on managements bad side, be cautious and don't push it. It's not worth the long-term potential havoc they can wreak on your future job hunting. So, if you're going to work at WEBTOON, give it your all! And if things start to turn sour, leave on your own terms ASAP to preserve future job opportunities! 8. The CEO and upper management are resistant to meaningful change. If you see bandaid solutions being done as "temporary" stop-gaps. They're probably not temporary. That bandaid probably is the whole solution. 9. It's incredibly difficult to quit, even if you want to leave. The way teams are structured, and the amount of work you have, and all the people that depend on you to do your job, make is emotionally very difficult to leave. I haven't met anyone who left and wasn't wracked with guilt. I almost didn't leave, and that thought is HORRIFYING, because I was at an all time low working there. So, if you choose to work here, just be cautious about your mental health. And if you want to leave --> just do it. You'll never regret it. 10. Demoralizing managerial strategies. I've never met managers more adept at unintentionally driving people into mental breakdowns or into the arms of competitors. I swear they mean well, but don't expect a high EQ from all of them.
