The Worst Place I Have Worked

Pros

In all fairness, eLuma does offer a few positives. The initial vision of the company is compelling and has the potential to drive meaningful work.

Cons

Joining eLuma initially seemed like a promising chapter in my career, but it rapidly devolved into a deeply troubling experience that profoundly affected my mental health and job satisfaction. This role has been the most challenging and negative professional experience I've encountered. From the outset at eLuma, it was evident that many operational aspects required significant refinement. Over time, thanks to the collective efforts of committed team members, we began to witness tangible progress. However, these improvements were consistently overshadowed by the attitude of senior leadership. Their approach was often dismissive, focusing on minor imperfections and overlooking the broader strides we had achieved. It was particularly disheartening to witness our hard work being diminished in team meetings. A recurring issue with the leadership was their tendency to highlight problems without considering their historical complexities. They frequently amplified minor issues and critiqued the team for not resolving them sooner. This style of communication felt more demoralizing than constructive, leaving us feeling devalued and misunderstood. The CEO, Jeremy, presented an outward appearance of understanding, but this was misleading. His private reactions were unexpectedly severe, accusatory, and confrontational, fostering an atmosphere of fear and doubt. This behavior quickly eroded my sense of trust and security within the workplace. Some people's near cult-like adoration of him, as noted in another review, is not only bizarre but also misleading. In my role, I often found myself in a precarious balance between taking initiative and inadvertently overstepping boundaries. The inconsistency was jarring: one day praised, the next day criticized for minor issues, and then back to being lauded. This erratic back-and-forth felt almost abusive. The pervasive micromanagement from senior leadership severely restricted our ability to make independent decisions, leading to a stifling and confusing work environment. Their frequent disregard for the nuances of ongoing projects, along with directives on tasks we were already addressing, underscored a significant disconnect with the team. The leadership's approach often led to hasty and poorly considered decisions. Coupled with the constant pressure and unpredictable, often harsh feedback, the work atmosphere became exhausting and disorienting. Reflecting on my time at eLuma, I am left with a profound sense of disappointment. The stark contrast between the senior leadership, particularly Jeremy's misleading demeanor, and the team was a far cry from the empowering and forward-thinking environment that had been promised. This review, while critical, honestly reflects the reality of a workplace where employee well-being is significantly compromised by a culture dominated by fear, excessive control, and a lack of appreciation for team efforts.

Thank you for your candor; hearing about our past employees' experience at eLuma helps us keep moving onward and upward. Here at eLuma, we are constantly seeking to provide students with the opportunities and resources they need to be successful, and at times, we have blurred the lines of our priorities when working to achieve that goal. We are polishing our processes daily to enhance clarity, further define responsibilities/expectations, and increase efficiency to continue serving our students and maintain our 3-year award-winning top workplace.

Pros

Option to work from home

Cons

This is by far the most mismanaged and bizarre place I have ever worked. Managers are not team players and do not treat their employees as equals - there are clear favorites. Also, many employees put the CEO on a pedestal as if he’s the greatest thing to ever exist, it’s very odd. Eluma does nothing to improve or encourage their employees. Expectations are very unclear yet you are somehow expected to know what is required of you. If you do decide to interview here I encourage you to ask the following: How do you set your employees up for success? How are goals set and how is performance measured? How is eluma supporting DEI initiatives? How was the previous person in this position successful?

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback, I truly do appreciate it. We are constantly working to improve the clarity of our communication and the clarity of our expectations. We've made improvements in what information is shared at our monthly all-hands meeting, what information is shared at our bi-annual company/department defining objective review, and what information will be shared at our upcoming annual summit. We understand giving feedback can come with feelings of discomfort which is why we also allow employees the opportunity to anonymously provide feedback through bi-annual eNPS surveys, quarterly employee wellbeing surveys, and an always-available anonymous feedback form. In addition to that, I personally and professionally give my guarantee that anyone is safe to come and speak with me at any time without fear of retaliation and a promise that I will maintain confidentiality to the utmost best of my abilities.

They don't care about the people

Pros

In the beginning, I felt valued and like I was making a difference. I believed in the company's mission and everyone lived its values. Working remotely is great and the benefits are okay.

Cons

The company values are no longer lived by the employees, and this doesn't just include recent employees but ones who used to live it. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing and they refuse to communicate effectively. The CEO has turned almost robotic, maybe to bury the guilt, and doesn't care about his people anymore. One department has recently fallen apart and I see others following suit shortly.
