How are promotions handled at Citi?

      Citi reviews

It once was a good place to work.

      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Steady paycheck Opportunities to move across departments, mostly laterally. Leave policies are fairly generous. While not as good as they once were, decent benefits, particularly vision insurance. For the most part direct Unit Managers are supportive and work to empower agents

      Cons

Despite already having poor pay compared to competitors, upper management is constantly cost cutting, customer service roles are consistently sent offshore despite protests from both customers and internal agents, Very little opportunities for promotion, Culture has fallen by the wayside, with very little reward for volunteerism or employee excellence. Insurance costs continue to rise each year while merit raises don't even cover the extra cost. Poor training policies and poor IT infastructure.

      Pros

Some of the people, being able to own my work

      Cons

Too many re-orgs, hiring from external instead of internal existing workforce for promotional opportunities, hiring people to lead teams that are not better, smarter, more experienced or stronger than existing team members that were overlooked for promotions. Career growth is difficult, unless you're drinking the cool-aid kissing up. But, those are the ones who are usually not knowledgeable to lead in the first place. That part makes most employees very disgruntled.

      Business outlook

      Pros

Promotion opportunities are there but you have to have been in your current role for at least 1 year, Great management communication. I have been huge fans of all of my managers. Not much micromanagement, assuming you get done what needs to be done. Overtime is always available on my team, which is the ONLY reason the pay is competitive; without overtime, the turnover would be far higher than it already is. If we were limited to only our base pay and ~3% yearly raises, the average analyst could not keep up with inflation and COLA increases & would consistently look to move to firms with higher salaries. The overtime availability is the main anchor keeping the tip of the spear analysts in place. Work life balance is excellent, especially at Tampa due to having more employees than we can fit at the site. Tampa is only 2x/wk in office requirements whereas firmwide in NAM is 3x/wk. Jane Fraser is a cutting edge CEO and seems to realize that among the Big 5 Investment Banks, the firm with the most flexible work requirements will attract and keep the best talent. The flexible work requirements are another offset to Citi offering a lower base pay than competing firms; a vast majority of millennials would take a drastic pay cut at a firm with hybrid requirements over a firm offering a higher salary but a full RTO mandate

      Cons

Onboarding process takes a long time from when you get first interview to starting your first day. Have to be in your current role for at least 1 year to be eligible for promotion which has lead to very qualified team members not be able to get openings they deserved & were more experienced/qualified than outside hires who filled the positions. Base pay is lower than competing investment banks but at least on my team this is offset by overtime availability. Oftentimes it is challenging to find the right team that will have the right access to complete certain tasks; workaround processes are common. Some systems and standard operating procedures are antiquated and very manual, opening up higher possibliities for errors. Citi had/has to layoff 20k team members by 2026, that has to be a con although a solid portion of that figure is not filling open positions from natural attrition
