The process took 1 day. I interviewed at AT&T (Denver, CO) in Oct 2011

      Interview

I applied to AT&T about 3 weeks ago. I received a phone call immediately about a week after I initially applied. I wasn't in the area at the time for the one on one interview so I had to wait until I got back into town. Getting back with the hiring manager was hard since I'm sure he/she was extremely busy. I finally emailed the hiring manager after calling them a few times. I got an email back for an interview which was today (10/12/11). I went in to speak with the hiring manager. Basically the things they spoke about was what the job involves, the training, what is expected of you, and then they went into what my customer service experience was like and to give them some examples. The hiring process is you get interviewed by the hiring manager then the store manager of whatever store you want to work at that's hiring. So after the short interview with the hiring manager I was sent directly to the store to meet the manager of that location. The interview was basically the same thing as the first interview. We went a little more into the training which is a lot apparently. A month long training program which could be in another state (expenses paid of course) a) the first two weeks are in a classroom setting Monday through Friday. b) the third week you are in the store you are going to be working at shadowing another senior rep. c) the last week you are back in the classroom setting for questions and to wrap it up. For the first 6 months you are paid your hourly which depends on your experience and what they call a "ramp up" commission. From what I gathered it is for you to focus more on your training and not make sales your first 6 months to help you out. However, if you started hitting the floor and your a killer sales rep they will take your ramp up away and you will be on hourly + commission which the commission is more than the ramp up if your selling anyways. They said an average rep makes from $35,000 to $40,000 a year, some make $50,000 to $60,000 and they have had some reps in the PAST make $80,000 to $100,000 in a year. This position is not a normal retail position hence the in depth training. The assistant manager told me that his girlfriend used to work 4 days a week and go to school full time and she was making more than him and he was working 6 days a week so that's why he works for AT&T now. The hiring manager told me that it cost AT&T about $40,000 to train one person since they pay for the expenses and pay you commission basically. AT&T is a union job so you do have to pay the union a fee once a month however you have someone to back you up if the manager is pissed off one day and fires you randomly. So after I did the interview with the store manager and assistant manager I was left with not much to go on except have a nice day. No "we will call you if your chosen for the position" or "give us a call on Friday". So basically I am in limbo of what is going to happen therefore I will be looking for another job in the mean time and if it pays more I will be going with that.

It is a basic customer service and teamwork questions. Asks you to teach them how to do something you're passionate about. Nothing crazy or unexpected. Laid back but professional, answered all my questions as well.

After the initial interview, the store will likely assess your product knowledge. They may ask you about various cell phone models, features, or accessories, and how you would explain them to customers. This is to evaluate your ability to understand and communicate technical information.
