      Vice President Infrastructure Engineering Interview

      3 Feb 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Columbus, OH
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Chase (Columbus, OH) in Jan 2019

      Interview

Note that Chase hands out the Vice President title like candy at Halloween, so don't be too impressed by it. I had applied to various Chase jobs before, but after having an employee refer me, it seemed to change the game. The recruiter called me a couple times to suggest various opportunities (all with the same VP title) that she asked me to apply for online and shortly after the 2nd call, I was invited for a phone interview with the hiring team (not the same team as the person who referred me). There were 2 peers (people with the same VP title I was interviewing for) on the call when I joined and they barely spoke other than to find out who was on the call. When they realized the 3rd peer wasn't going to make it to the call, they seemed a bit lost and so they invited someone else at the spur of the moment and that person ended up being the only person to speak during the rest of the call. His attitude was somewhat hostile and arrogant, so of course his style was to seek a "gotcha". In pursuing the "gotcha" moment, he asked technical questions that were so broad that they did't require detailed or technical answers. I may have miscalculated the level of detail he was looking for in one question, but instead of prompting that he wanted a more technical answer and not just a human language description, he chose to insult me. Everyone else still remained quiet. The insult was phrased as a question, so I just went with it at the time, but it began to bother me after the interview when it hit me what had happened. Ultimately, this person left me with a negative impression of Chase and the team. I will close a Chase credit card over this. It's only been 5 calendar days since the interview, but as I replay those comments in my head, given that this was the only outspoken member of the group, I realize there won't be an offer.
