      Data Engineer Interview

      14 Apr 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Dufrain in Jan 2023

      Interview

Three stage interview: 1. Internal recruiter, 2. SQL and Python MCQ online test, 3. Face-to-face interview with hiring manager and team on Ms Teams. Absolute waste of time. The online exams are a joke, I've never done a coding exam via multiple choice under such extreme time pressure. They don't give you the score at the end, with good reason, so that you don't have a bargaining chip for a better salary when they make an offer. They advertised the role for £55k -£65k, with maximum twice a month in the London office. They knew from the start I live 2.5hrs away but claimed they were fine with me coming into the office on an as-need basis maximum twice per month. This soon evolved and when it got to the offer stage they low-balled with a £50k annual salary and a twice PER WEEK in the office commitment with no remuneration for the travel costs. When I asked why the conditions of employment changed so drastically from what was advertised, they said the person doing the first stage interview was "coming down with a cold, and might have communicated the requirements incorrectly". When I challenged the offer they disappeared for 4 days and claimed the hiring manager "loved me and is fighting for me". They came back with minimal increase from the original offer that doesn't make up for the £800 I would be spending in commuting costs per month. Put your money where your mouth is, stroking my ego will not make me sign up for cheap labour leaving me substantially worse off financially than my current job!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Makes you write a MCQ exam of 50 questions in 45 minutes covering advanced concepts, and the proceeds to ask you beginner questions in the final interview like "explain joins" and "what's the difference between a primary key and an index". Just doesn't make sense.
