Project Manager and Problem Solver (Tech) Interview

      23 Jun 2011
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Epic in Jun 2011

      Interview

The company first contacted me; they had found my resume on one of the job search engines. They asked me to apply for their "Problem Solver" position. I did this and then I received an email from them a week or so later to take a personality exam. This exam isn't anything to stress over, it is just really basic personality questions, some word questions and basic problem solving math questions. The entire assessment took about 45 minutes. I also had to submit a resume and answer a few basic questions like expected salary and ability to relocate and % desired travel. The one thing they asked for that really threw me off was my high school SAT scores. I'm not sure why they wanted those, but I found it really odd since most colleges don't even take these scores into account anymore. I didn't remember what mine were and so I just never turned them in. I'm not sure if that affected my final review. After this, I was emailed about a week or so later about setting up a phone interview. The phone interview was essentially an info session for Epic. The person I spoke to was very nice. He asked me the exact same questions that I had already answered online. He also asked me about work experience and I briefly mentioned a two-semester internship I did at a very successful medical company and then as a student level researcher at my college but he didn't really ask me what I did there. He asked me what sort of job I was looking for though. The point of this phone call was to simply fill in the holes on my online resume, get a feel for what jobs I was looking into and telling me about their company. Overall, it was a really relaxed interview. A couple days later, I got another email from HR about a proctored written skills assessment. The assessment consisted of two separate tests. First was a math skills exam. The questions weren't really difficult, they were similar to what you would see on a standardized test. This exam was testing for speed. The second assessment was computer programming. As a student in the biological sciences, I have absolutely no experience with programming so I don't really know what to say about this part. Basically, they were teaching you a new language and for each section, they would teach you something with words, give you an example and then ask you a multiple choice question similar to the example. So this was basically a logic exam to test how quickly you can learn and apply new information. At the beginning of the test they asked if you had taken any programming classes. I didn't find this to be super difficult but it definitely took me a lot longer than the first assessment. This skills test along with my college transcript were sent to WI for review. So about a week after that, I received an email from them saying they had decided to move on with other candidates. To be honest, I had decided before I got this email that I didn't really want to work for this company. I did some research and I've read on multiple forums from multiple people that they hire young people fresh out of college with no work experience and work them really hard and basically keep turning people over. Of course I don't know if this is actually true, but I was a little worried after reading this so many times. I also wasn't in love with the fact that they were so concerned with my SAT scores, my GPA (which is 3.7), college transcript and how I performed on their skills assessment rather then asking me about my work experience and extra curricular activities. When I first researched the company on their website, it really seemed like they valued people based on their achievements but I didn't feel like this was of high concern to them during the interview process. Of course I could be totally wrong and they could have reviewed my resume and considered everything (except an actual face-to-face interview) and decided I wasn't right. After all, it is a huge company with lots of applicants. I had just read a lot of opinions from others online that were pretty negative which turned me off quickly to Epic. I hope these things aren't true about the company but it's always good to be cautious and I really value other people's opinions, especially those that have worked their prior that posted about their experience (and it was negative). Personally, I didn't like how the process takes 1-2 months and I didn't even get a real interview. I'd read that they filter in and out a lot of people on their campus so I was hoping for some sort of on site interview but I guess I didn't score high enough on the skills assessment. Or maybe it was because I had never emailed them my SAT scores. I wish everyone luck if they choose to apply to Epic! I hope you have a better experience than mine and find what you are looking for.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

None from the phone interview were difficult or unexpected. I'd say having to take a logic exam over computer programming was the most difficult since I'd never seen anything like that before.
