In a COBOL program, what is the difference between using SSRANGE and NOSSRANGE?

I'm not sure, in my mainframe oriented academia and all my years of mainframe development and support I never had to use this. (Of all the things to ask, this just blew my mind, since it really seems completely irrelevant.)
