I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Key Lime Interactive (New York, NY)
Interview
BEWARE: This company is highly unprofessional - please be sure to notice the red flags.
I applied for a manager position and was called for an interview. However, the company thought I would be a better fit for project manager. This is fine and was willing to take the pay cut for a learning experience.
First interview was great
Second interview was very strange. The guy I spoke with, power talked the entire time and it was very difficult to get a word in. I wanted to learn more about the company culture and also sell my skills but I could only do so by interrupting. Lots of profanity used during our interview. Red Flag for sure but willing to overlook and assumed it was to see if I was able to interject.
Third interview with CEO: Terrible and red flags everywhere. Firstly, she was late and unprepared. She started off by asking if I even wanted this job and I felt like she was trying to talk me out of it. I continued but noticed that she was not engaging and the biggest red flag was that when discussing hard skills, she responded with an attitude and said “that’s not a project management tool..but okay”. When I proceeded to tell her about the plug ins available in this software for project management, she was still disinterested. I left the interview feeling like it was not going to be a match for either of us.
However, a few days later, they requested 5 references (which is a lot!). I had to reallly think about whether this was the right move but if they were interested in me and could provide a great learning experience in a very difficult industry, then I was willing to take the chance.
Haven’t heard back for a week and a half. Maybe I didn’t get it? I followed up and the recruiter gave me a call and told me I got the position. Fantastic. EXCEPT that it was ~25% lower than what I asked for which is very significant. When I tried to negotiate (which I tried to get a formal letter first but everyone only would communicate through text and call) they rescinded the offer. Thus confirming my suspicions that this is a red flag company.
NOW it could be that there was a last minute acceptance, my requested salary was too high for budget, or maybe even that they felt I wasn’t a great fit. This is fine but my biggest gripe was how UNPROFESSIONAL the entire debacle was. I suspect that this company, like the reviews say, lacks boundaries, micromanages, and lacks serious work life balance.
I wouldn’t even be surprised with them posting a justification but shame on you for wasting everyone’s time and low balling a candidate and handling the offer the way you did. Glad it didn’t work out!
