      Product Owner Interview

      19 May 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Revolut in Mar 2020

      Interview

The formal process was meant to be * two-four hour KYC assignment (that is never just that) given you have to conduct analysis using Python and/or Excel, as well as writing a report * five interviews (1 hr interviews) with various people, which then changed to six mid process The initial interview skimmed over the assignment with questions validating thought processes on equivalent scenarios. Subsequent interviews were to validate experience, workshop scenario based and behavioural questions. The final one was with someone quite senior at Revolut. I had overwhelmingly positive feelings towards the company and their mission, despite negative publicity in the media and people in my professional network. However some red flags arose with disorganisation in their recruitment team in providing timely and accurate correspondence to questions. On balance communication with candidates I would rate as poor, which is a big problem if you want to attract talent and provide a positive experience. Things started from a “catch up” call about available roles to a initial informal screening interview for a role on offer (with a different hiring manager). Though unexpected, something I envisage not all candidates would accommodate. Scheduling seemed to be a recurring issue, with an ask of a half day off. This was able to change to smaller 1-2 hour blocks that still needed to be moved around. If Revolut needed something from you they would be in communicative, but requests/clarifications required constant follow up or chasing with at times incomplete answers. Hence expectation management is poor, and being a startup isn’t an excuse as we are all trying to do things fast and be successful! About half way through the process, the five interview process became six. The final interview with someone quite senior at Revolut went well, although due to Internet connectivity issues on their side they didn’t introduce themselves properly and the video interview had to change to voice. Materially it shouldn’t affect the process, but if rapport counts for anything it’s not ideal. In trying to get feedback the recruitment team: * provided a dead scheduling link * have been uncommunicative in rescheduling * have not responded to emails Disappointing experience I would summarise this interaction as with Revolut. This is despite some of the interesting and smart people I spoke to. Having invested a significant amount of time in the process, it all seemed like a waste. Warning that the time Revolut will invest in you for recruitment seems asymmetric to what they expect from you! I'm quite shocked to say this as for managerial roles there is an element of ensuring a company is the right fit for a candidate not solely just the other way around. Perhaps I dodged a bullet, only time will tell?

Thank you for your honest review. We appreciate your taking the time to give us thorough feedback about your recruitment process with Revolut. We have been going through some internal restructuring of the recruitment process, which has led to some confusion and inconsistency with the experience in the last month. We understand that this is quite inconvenient, and disruptive to candidates, but we are continually iterating and improving our processes to get the best from our candidates and provide them with a seamless, engaging, and enjoyable experience. We are disappointed to learn that this was not the case for you - but we hope that you will give us another chance. We will provide your feedback about communication, feedback, and scheduling to our recruitment team so that they can double check all their processes and ensure they are running smoothly. We encourage all our recruiters to have strong and consistent communication with our candidates, including providing them with any support or clarification they may need throughout the process. We want all our candidates to feel properly informed at all stages of the process, including understanding what is needed of them at any point. We also encourage you to complete the interview and candidate surveys that are sent out to all our candidates. The interview surveys are linked to specific interviewers, allowing us to follow up directly with the interviewer and provide them proper support in order to deliver a consistent and excellent interview experience. We appreciate your time in doing these surveys - we read every single response.

      Interview

Started with a 15min screening with the recruiter, they explain the hiring process and the next step was a problem solving interview. Total of 4 steps finishing with a bar raiser interview with the CPO

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They gave a high level prompt about an investment product that stopped growing. You had to ask for data and explain your thought process. The difficulty is that I had to be very specific with the datapoints asked.
