First communication was at the first 1:1 interview at their office. Sat down in a meeting room with 2 guys. The first guy was from a manager-style role and talked about the company and was more interested in personality and interest in the job. the second guy was a lead developer who was more interested in the skills and previous experience. I believe the technical test is usually done on the second interview but as I had such a long way to travel they combined both into 1 interview to minimize the travel for me.
