      Software Engineer In Test Interview

      24 Sept 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Zendesk

      Interview

Shared CV through someone working there. Had a telephonic discussion with a recruiter and an interview via Skype set up with someone in Florida at 7 am Melbourne time two days later. The technical Interview was less of an interview and more of an interrogation. It was quite clear the interviewer couldn't understand the fact that different companies can have standards and processes different from his own company. For a 30 minutes interview he spent 25 minutes interrogating me on - 1. Why can't I install Internet Explorer on ubuntu virtual machine. 2. Why do I use a Virtual machine at all? 3. Why can't I Instead change my current company's process and standards and start using cucumber and ruby on my local windows machine. The interviewer was unimaginably rude and in my opinion a person with little knowledge himself. Maybe it was late evening in Florida and he was in a hurry to go home after a probably tough day, he was venting out some frustration on me. His behaviour in the first 5 minutes made it quite clear that he was in no mood to interview to recruit but was doing a formality. On pointing out a flaw in their application which I had done some study on he became very angry and his tone worsened. Said a lot about the company culture if he was to be a mascot of it. Clearly the cool videos on YouTube and the company's site are misleading about the company culture and its people.

Thank you for your feedback and sorry to hear about your interview experience. Making sure candidates have a great experience throughout the process is incredibly important to us. Specifically for this role, we have changed the process and are now only assigning local interviewers in the Melbourne office. The company videos you've seen are, we feel, a true reflection of our culture and values. Sorry that you were not able to experience that this time around.
