Pros

Everyone is very friendly, willing to help at any time. Food in the office on Fridays :)

Cons

Codebase was a mess, inconsistent commenting, unneeded classes. Massively disorganized when I was there. Had to often pick up tickets on my own while waiting for my manager to be free from his flood of meetings, so my tasks were all over the place. Unlikely you will be creating anything new, mostly just code maintenance and optimization. You may be adding new features, possibly, it very much depends on the team you're on. Pay for interns is laughable. I earned more than others at $11, the average was $9-$10. They love reorganizing everyone desks occasionally for no discernible reason, I would like to have a desk and be there unless there is a legitimate reason to move me.

Thank you for the detailed feedback! Feedback like this has been helpful as we continued to refine our processes and make sure that our employees aren't wasting time looking for needed information instead of focusing on the work in their area of expertise. We did a poor job of supporting our development supervisors in the past, so I can see how they might have been unavailable when needed. I applaud your initiative and willingness to identify work and make the best of it. I am sorry that you had to do that. We've restructured our teams in a way that allows team leads to focus on their team and be available. I believe that you would feel differently today than you did in 2015, and that's in part thanks to you and your peers for providing this type of feedback. As far as desk shuffling is concerned... this is a pain associated with rapid growth. Our organization grew quickly and sometimes that presented logistical challenges of who would sit where to ensure that teams were co-located. While we are still growing rapidly, we've acquired additional space and have logistics experts on staff that have made a world of difference in minimizing disruptions to our development teams.

I am sorry to hear that your experience at the Lab has been a negative one. It appears that culture and values as well as compensation and benefits are of greatest concern to you. We developed a set of core values that Lab is based on, and I personally work very hard to ensure that every employee of the Lab, from each intern to the CEO, subscribes to those values. If you believe that we are not acting in accordance to our values, please be active and vocal and let me know. I will be happy to work with you to make the Lab a more pleasant environment for you and your peers. All our FTEs are state employees and receive state benefits that are second to none. We also strive to be competitive in our compensation. I am sorry to hear that you feel compensation and benefits are insufficient. We value our employees, and strive to compensate everyone fairly. I am happy to work with each of our employees to ensure our mutual expectations are met. As an employee of the Lab you know that my door is always open and I am always open to feedback to make the Lab a better place for our employees. Please let me know how we can do better and how I can help you enjoy your time with us.

I’m sorry to hear about your experience. We are a small shop and I’ve had the pleasure and honor of personally knowing every single full-time employee since we were founded in 2002. In recent years’ exit interviews, all but one employee provided positive feedback. They’ve had different reasons for moving to other opportunities, often seeking different challenges rather than being unhappy at the Lab. We have room for improvement, but I haven’t received such negative feedback from any current or former employee. The remaining employee who provided no feedback had been recently hired, took nearly six months of leave, then requested long-term remote work. They quit after this request was declined due to performance concerns. We have very generous policies, including five weeks of vacation and personal leave, and give serious accommodation to employee work-life balance, but must also deliver on our project commitments. We strive to support our employees, and I welcome you to contact me personally and help me better understand your frustration.
