Inspiring colleagues and quality work

Pros

I have been with company for almost a decade and still very much feel inspired by my colleagues, the project work we deliver and clients we work with. While the broader shifts in the market, and growth of the company will undoubtedly continue to change how things operate, we work with people who genuinely care about each other and the quality of the work we deliver.

Cons

We have talented people looking to join us outside of the main hubs in the UK, or those with young families who have recently moved out of London, it may be time to offer remote-first contracts.

Pros

Seems like HR have finally clocked that people deserve pay rises!

Cons

Recent resignations are through the roof. HR making fluffy excuses to block promotions with no substance or meaningful feedback. People being forced to stay on accounts and not allowed to roll off. People being forced to do roles they don’t want to do. Not enough resources to win new work, partners can’t sell, demand higher than supply and people continue to leave. Struggling to hire because people are finally speaking up. Everyone is fed up of a toxic BD focused culture. Many resigning with no back up plan speaks volumes of just how bad it is. Even people who did get promoted are leaving to escape the culture. Stupid company making stupid decisions and playing a game nobody knows how to play.

Thank you for your feedback, we wish you well in your new job. To respond to your advice to management first: The promotion criteria is transparent at Gate One - people need to demonstrate evidence of performing at the grade above across the three pillars of performance: Client advisory/delivery, business development (appropriate for the grade – which is very light at junior grades) and internal contribution. The 20 high performers who were promoted in February 2026 met the criteria for promotion across the three pillars. Those who didn’t weren’t promoted this time. Sometimes it was because there wasn’t enough evidence of BD but there were also examples where BD was evidenced but there wasn’t enough evidence across the other two pillars, context is also always important. Every single person who wasn’t promoted in February was provided with feedback and the next opportunity for promotion is in August. We’re sorry that you have personally been frustrated by the promotion process. As mentioned previously, we urge potential new joiners to ask about how we do promotions at Gate One as the criteria is transparent and the methodology of having a diverse SLT promotion panel that changes each time and disconnecting it from performance appraisals are good practice and was implemented following independent benchmarking. We also run the promotion panel twice per year instead of once which is another thing we do differently compared to a lot of other consultancies. The other things you’ve been frustrated with – lack of rotations on projects, the balance between BD and client delivery and our pay philosophy are all being reviewed within the EVP Evolution ‘change the business’ initiative.

Pros

I have supported Gate One for the past 4 years. 2024 and 2025 were undoubtedly difficult years as the business went through a transition from the founder team to new leadership post acquisition, faced a volatile market and re-built the partner team. This was tough, required some difficult decisions and wasn't for everyone. However this year the business has emerged from this period and is now motoring ahead as a genuine international management consultancy challenger brand. It has a clear strategy and propositions that are bearing fruit in all 5 markets that it operates in, a Managing Partner with real clarity about where he wants to take the business and how he is going to do this and a hungry, experienced and excellent partner team. As always Gate One also has a tremendous talent pool and client base. This next chapter will not be for everyone as the business scales and professionalises, but if you are looking to join a consultancy that knows what it is, is growing at pace and is going places, Gate One is worth a look.

Cons

Such a brilliant founder led story and experience prior to 2024 can be a drag on the business Gate One is today. It's important to look forward not back.
