So Toxic

Pros

Hogan can be a fun place to work. Many of the employees mean well and are good people. The products are absolutely top notch and Hogan is clearly the leader in their space. The company does good business, has a good brand, and makes a lot of money.

Cons

An extremely toxic work environment that comes down directly from the leadership and in particular the founder. So much top talent has been outright fired, left, or even sued (yes there have been multiple lawsuits against former c-suiters recently). Even people with tenure, allegiance, and high performance. The culture is full of mistrust, blame, lies and finger pointing. The founder runs the whole thing like his own social psychological experiment and the only people survive are the ones who know how to play the sick game or who stay out of the way. Don't feel sorry for those who are still there because they all know and willingly play the game (e.g., watch people's lives get turned upside down) while they hide in the corners and make excuses. And the toxicity goes beyond the employees as the company lies to clients and makes fun of the people who work there.

First and foremost, we absolutely agree with the point that Hogan Assessments is a fun place to work, and we are fortunate to have so many good people who currently work here and have previously worked here. In addition, we agree that our product portfolio coupled with first-class service has allowed our company to grow for the past three decades. However, we disagree with the points made about Hogan being a “toxic work environment.” We have several longstanding employees, as well as many newer employees, who are committed to delivering stellar service and performing at the level expected of the global leader in personality assessment. Just like any other workplace, people move on to new opportunities for a variety of reasons, and we wish those individuals the best in their new endeavors. One thing we adamantly disagree with is lying to clients. That is absolutely false and would be immediately addressed should that occur. That is simply not how we do business, whether it be in the past, present, or future. We hold the highest standards in regard to proper use and ethical application of our assessments, are attuned to the impact our assessments have on people’s lives, and given the high stakes nature of our business, we would not be in business if we made a habit of lying to clients. We pride ourselves in being transparent and honest. This approach allows us to develop long-term relationships built on partnership and thought leadership. In closing, the organization’s founder, Dr. Robert Hogan, is among the most well-respected personality psychologists in the world. There is no “special brand of treachery” in how he operates the business or how he interacts with his employees. He is as highly respected within the walls of Hogan as he is across the globe. The company is fortunate to have a visionary like Dr. Hogan leading the organization, which is why the company as a whole has evolved into the world’s premier provider of personality assessments.

Pros

Good group of people as a collective but many are looking to move on as management is an unhappy place.

Cons

With the CEO recently moving on under dubious circumstances and a number of GM's under fire for crossing the owner and myself being recently attached and pushed out for challenging the status quo it makes it hard to see a future for this company and anyone who joins it.

While we support current and former employees' rights to express their opinions, we prefer to ensure that they are factual, so we would like to correct three inaccuracies in this post: First, Hogan has no GM positions at all. Therefore, the “GMs under fire” comment is not possible. Second, our previous CEO resigned. We all agreed that he would continue to represent us for a period--an agreement which both parties happily honored. He remains a close friend of the firm and has graciously provided some assistance after his resignation. That hardly supports “dubious” circumstances regarding his resignation, and we believe such comments are disrespectful of him and his contributions. Finally, we neither force people to lie or mislead other employees nor condone it. Doing so is inconsistent with our values, and would be unacceptable from an employee.
