Toxic and Dishonest

Pros

Colleagues who support one another through a very challenging culture.

Cons

There have been a recent wave of reviews that are very clearly being posted by Paley executives to increase their ratings average, and drown out the overwhelmingly negative and truthful reviews about the culture at Paley and its leadership. The fact that these reviews specifically name the CEO and praise her when the majority of reviews on here say that she has created a toxic environment by being verbally abusive to staff, among other unethical leadership practices is incredibly telling. All of these reviews are also very similar in what they say and how they are worded. Here is what you should do right now: filter glassdoor reviews so that you can see all reviews from any type of staff member, and sort by date. The story will become very clear. The picture that will be painted is that Paley has created one of the most toxic atmospheres that you will ever come across, and while being quarantined, they are doing damage control. Read the negative reviews. You'll see the pattern, and this goes back years. Here is the truth. Since their posts are repeating the same dishonest things, here are completely honest and real points made by numerous others in other reviews as well: People are talked down to all the time in ways that you could never possibly imagine. They are forced to work long hours. The term "fire drill" is used by the entire staff daily to describe how work is passed down. The CEO only cares about the board, not her staff. There is a very serious problem at Paley and instead of addressing it and fixing it, they care more about the public perception than the reality. If you’re researching the company because of available jobs, don’t write these red flags off as isolated incidents. This is company wide. This impacts everyone. This will impact you before your first week is over and it will only get worse. Read all of the reviews. Filter in all positions. Filter by date. The truth is easy to see.

Paley Problems

Pros

The programming involves some famous people and important subjects.

Cons

People at this place quit all the time. They quit without other jobs and they quit without warning. Nobody tells anybody - people just disappear…even high up people who run departments are gone. And they are never fired - they always quit. Even the HR people quit over and over again. A HR person once said to an employee “I am sorry that you have to be part of this. I am sorry that I am a part of it.“ ZERO work / life balance. People at Paley are often forced (not asked) to work 6 or 7 day weeks, usually with little or no warning. TOXIC Culture: Unhappiest people I have ever seen at any job.. Every day is chaos. Meetings get scheduled and don’t happen. Projects get assigned on fast deadlines and then abandoned. Everything is done in secret. THE CEO is a liar. She lies in big meetings and small meetings. She lies to outside people. She lies to potential hires. She lies to the Board (and trust me - one day the incredibly powerful CEOs who fund this place are going to get the message). But hopefully reviews like this will get somebody at one of those companies to do some real digging and what they find out will put the CEO (and probably her inner circle) out on the street. FEAR. It’s hard to really explain how much fear there is inside this place. People are terrified to make a decision, tell anybody anything or basically do their job.

Pros

Despite the overwhelming cons you will read in this post, there are some pros to be found. Many hardworking and genuine people work at the Paley Center for Media. They are unfortunately hard to find, but when you do, hold on to them. These authentic people that live beyond the office politics that shape this place make it worth coming to work.

Cons

After a full 6 months of contract work, I can honestly say I’ve never experienced anything like the Paley Center for Media. Office culture is determined by the senior leadership team who have fostered an atmosphere of intimidation often resulting to yelling or scare tactics. Leadership is also comprised of mostly older employees who openly state their reluctance to use more efficient technology in the face of improved results and work-flow. As a woman of color, I often faced long looks as well as inappropriate commentary. Statements frequently made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed. In my time here, I’ve also noticed that employees of color are often brought in on a temporary contract with no hope of finding full-time employment with benefits. I’m a prime example of this working for 6 months without healthcare and the topic of becoming a full employee was never brought up regardless of having my contract renewed +4 times. Lastly, if you want to be respected and valued in the workplace, this company is not for you. If you value your personal time outside of your workplace, this company is not for you. If you want to work with culturally competent and growth focused employer, the Paley Center for Media is not the place for you.
