Pros

trivago provides great learning opportunities and gives a lot of ownership and accountability. They also provide significant flexibility in multiple aspects for it's employees, in terms of: working hours, attending personal commitments and balancing work/private life, holidays and a reasonable hybrid policy. The company also puts a lot of emphasis into making the workplace enjoyable through other benefits, such as a having a great campus, plenty of cultural events and amazing parties, supporting sporting events, providing free snacks & drinks in the office, budget for training, attending conferences and regular monthly team events. I've also always appreciated the company's general attitude & approach to learning through failure. Above all, the main factor that has kept me for 10+ years at trivago are the fantastic work colleagues. The vast majority of colleagues I've worked with over the years are incredibly smart, motivated, respectful, fun and genuine people. On top of that, the high level of diversity throughout the company makes it even more enjoyable.

Cons

While changes are necessary to remain competitive in the travel industry, there have been times over the years where it became a bit exhausting and discouraging to have such frequent reshuffling of teams/projects/strategies. This varies a lot per team but some parts of the company still feel as though they haven't fully transitioned away from more of a start-up mindset where things are lacking a bit in terms of structure, processes & documentation.

Pros

I have been working at trivago for almost 5 years now. The company has shown willingness to re-invent itself, transition to a remote and hybrid model and change business model in order to better cope with the uncertainty caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, recently management addressed a well known problem within the company, that was the discrepancy between trivago's employees salaries and salaries for the same roles in other companies. In fact, everybody received a one-time extra salary increase (in addition to the yearly salary review we all get) to fill or reduce this pay gap. For me, the top PROs of working at trivago are: - Great flexibility (working hours, holidays, processes, communication etc.). The company lives the word "flexibility" or at least tries its best to do so. - Great opportunity to progress. I have changed 4 different roles in 5 years, either taking on more responsibilities or getting more involved in specific topics. - Transparency and accountability. It is nice to know that people around me are willing to share results, successes and failures widely. This helps everybody strive for the common good, rather than just for personal interest

Cons

Of course, over time there have been a few cons: - A bit of a confusing environment. We're in "experimenting mode" quite often. This potentially creates progress and value, but it can be hard to manage sometimes - Being slow in embrace measure to fill the pay gaps with other companies - Having insisted too much for years on the usual start up benefits (ping pong and free beers, for example), rather than emphasizing the freedom given to employees to create value. Luckily, this has somehow changed lately (also thanks to the remote and hybrid set ups)

Pros

Amazing work/life balance. Pay can be very good depending on unit/position. Great social events. Coworkers are friendly, open, interesting people. International workforce with many cultures. Loyal people are often rewarded. Company trip is always fun. Flexible working hours. Nice offices in Düsseldorf. Generally a good atmosphere and great people to work with.

Cons

Long-term strategy is an oxymoron here. Don't expect the company to stay committed to a vision for more than a year. No understanding of how to build/maintain a brand. There's a reason all competitors have passed by even though trivago should have great brand recognition. Marketing strategies still based on what worked in 2016. For all the constant strategic changes, the company is surprisingly slow to adapt to newness. The website and product feel stale and the marketing does as well. It doesn't look like a company/brand that's ready to compete in 2023. "That would be a lot of work" is a valid reason not to pursue a project/initiative. Data is used as a replacement for decision-making instead of a factor to be considered. The product does not innovate and lead the consumer on a unique experience. It just replicates pieces of experiences of other websites.

Pros

Flexible working hours are great, though messages do happen outside of normal business hours. Generally, direct managers are great. When I had some mental health related issues, I was given the time and space to breath and take some time to make sure I was on top of my game. Unlimited holiday (with the state minimum) is great, plus having 2 company sponsored holidays (a week in summer, and 2 weeks around Christmas) per year is nice. Learning is at the core of trivago's ethos. Everyone tries and learns from everything they do and makes learning opportunities out of mistakes and fumbles. The Talent and Culture team even keep this belief when changing processes and making rules.

Cons

The flexible working hours are a double edged sword, meaning you might get messages outside of core business hours, mostly from coworkers. Pay for software developers is on the lower end for the market. No option for full-remote. We're only remote right now because the government has suggested it due to the pandemic. We'll probably be back to normal once the pandemic is over. Feedback between talents tends to be soft and talents are encouraged to keep it soft for fear of insulting others, despite more direct feedback being useful for talent growth. As for career growth, there isn't much. You can either be a software dev or a lead. There really isn't anything in between.

Good from far, far from good

Pros

- Nice offices - Flexible working in terms of hours and working remotely - Friendly, casual culture among employees and generally a supportive working environment - Perks like unlimited leave, free beer, parties etc that entice younger talent - Good work life balance

Cons

Would be cautious about relocating to Germany for an opportunity at trivago, when their strategy is constantly changing and they do not necessarily have the vision and resources to sustain roles /projects for even the upcoming few months- huge lay offs done immediately after 8 months of aggressive hiring of staff from across the globe, getting them to move their family and lives to Germany. Adversity to change makes it hard to make an impact. Very slow to get things done as various stakeholders and teams working towards their own goals - little alignment within the company Too much focus on managing upward and ensuring everyone knows the good work they are doing, but not enough on the quality or quantity of the work getting done Company struggles to evolve, new projects are not given the time needed to succeed Little sensitivity from top management with layoffs - announcing they will take the entire company on a summer holiday 1 day prior to doing layoffs of multiple teams is tasteless Claim to be culturally diverse but clearly at a leadership team level that diversity is lacking

Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We’re very sorry if you were affected by our recent strategy review. These decisions are always difficult and are not taken lightly by our leadership team. Throughout these changes we have helped several talents find new opportunities either within or outside trivago and offered further financial support as well. Successful businesses are adaptive and constantly adjusting to changing market environments. We are not justifying what happened, but unfortunately the current market dynamics required us to change course (like several tech companies, that have had to make similar or even bigger changes over the past few months). We believe our renewed focus on our core value proposition places us in a position to work towards our long-term common goal of creating a product that users love. We realize that these changes cause disruption for those affected and want to reiterate that these decisions aren’t taken lightly. We truly wish you the best and hope you have found an amazing new opportunity. NB: For transparency, the review mentions ‘massive layoffs’, but only a small percentage of our workforce was directly affected by the recent strategy review.
