      Interview

So, I just had a PhD Engineering (Systems & Infrastructure) interview at Facebook last week. At first, I thought I would be interviewing with an engineer from the prospective team. My interviewer and I never spoke - just email. Next, I was scheduled for a tech interview. At the end, the interviewer said he was from a different business group at Facebook. A quick LinkedIn search at the end of my interview revealed that the interviewer hadn’t been at Facebook for a long time (and Facebook was his first job straight out of college). My interviewer called, said his name, we asked how we were both doing, and interviewer went straight to asking a coding question. Needless to say, I didn’t pass the interview. I emailed my recruiter to try to get some feedback, and in return offer my feedback as well. So, dow does Facebook, and Facebook recruiters genuinely quantify “what a good candidate” is, and measure success metrics of the candidates’s performance at the long run. Mind you, I have had 4 engineering internships at Intel (with few awards) while completing my PhD, and my last internship this past summer was at Microsoft Research in a high-impact group. My impression was that the interviewers are junior engineers and freshers, and looking to hire more college grads rather people with more industry experience, perhaps?
