      Product Manager Interview

      7 May 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Meta

      Interview

By far the most bizarre interview I’ve had in my career. Started out well enough being contacted by an hr person who thought I had ‘the perfect’ background for the vertical to which they were adding PM’s. The first screening round went great. The next step was 2 back to back sessions for PM sense and execution with 2 peer PM’s over Blue Jeans across the pond. It all went downhill from there. To Fb’s ignorance, I prepared for this with former FB PM’s. I practiced structure, content and delivery being careful to inject metrics every step of the way. Was told FB has an ocd complex around metrics. I also took it a step further by introducing metrics that are industry standard for that vertical and which FB’s Own executive for that vertical put front and center the day before at the F8 conference. By their own admission, both PM’s conceded that they didn’t have a background in the industry specific metrics that I presented, so they would be unable to evaluate me along those kpi’s. Really? What’s the point of approaching me so I can transplant my previous skillset into current role if you have no benchmarks? Mind you, these are same metrics splashed across f8 2 days prior—used by your competitors—not terms I came up with overnight. Irony is that their top tech chiefs put on a horse and pony show about filtering out bias by training data sets across diverse feature vectors, yet my disqualification was textbook bias—by the interviewers’ own admission. No feedback, no insight as to how I was being evaluated—just a generic email in the wee hours of the morning telling me I didn’t make it past that round. This experience was educational. I always suspected FB was more fluff than substance. The PM interviews confirmed that the process is engendered into strategy across all levels to perpetuate the illusion. Thank you FB for not giving me an incentive to step down from my professional and intellectual path.
