Could be better - Operation Excellence UPS Employee Review

Pros

Some resemblance of "career progression." Its in your own hands. They do promote from within more than hire out. Insurance is good, mostly because it has to compete with the union's. The work is steady, but doesn't make much of an impact in the end product. Most of the jobs outside of the operation are find-your-own-workload type of jobs where you have to justify your own existence. Can be a pro or con depending on you as person.

Cons

Absolute ton of middle management bloat. You will have managers making 6 figures on the conference call screaming about operational goals and the lack of progress while they sit on calls back to back for 10 hours a day and don't actually do any of the work or help with a solution. They use being "swamped" or "catching up" as a reason to never get back to you or work with you toward anything tangible. Its a CYA mechanic to seem busy and working. More often than not, you will be training your superior. Your department is scattered all over the district so making useful connections in a work setting is usually nonexistent unless stationed at the a major hub. Supervisors and mangers probably see you in person once a year, if at all, and hold your career progression in their hands with quarterly reviews on your performance. It comes down to how much they like you. Kiss the ring.

Pros

The pay is excellent .health care is 100 % paid with 100 %coverage...with exception to eye and dental which is about 70%..coverage...pension is outstanding..full package with wages and benefits is worth 130,000 yearly..without a college education I am grateful for the standard of living UPS HAS AFFORDED ME AND MY FAMILY!...and with 27 years of service I now get 6 weeks vacation with 8 sick days..and 9 paid holidays...we work hard like many people in the work force but we are well compensated!.

Cons

The only con is while your children are young you give up a lot of family time..I never got to watch my kids play sports and missed a lot of their growing years...the job can be hard on your home life but if you can make it through those years you and your family will enjoy the financial freedom that UPS provides...and now I look forward to a prosperous retirement!...so hang in there all you young drivers...
