Pros

Pros: • Exposure to hotel operations if you’re new to hospitality. • Some kind coworkers, but they’re also burnt out.

Cons

• Disrespectful and unprofessional management: Managers routinely discourage asking questions. Instead of supporting you, they respond with sarcastic comments like “What do you think you should do?”—even when clarification is clearly needed. • Hostile work culture: Mistakes are met with public humiliation rather than constructive feedback in private. There’s little to no regard for your dignity or mental well-being. • Unfair labor practices: Despite having previous hotel experience, I was paid $18/hour while coworkers with no experience made $21+. Overtime hours were often not reflected in my paycheck, and there was no access to a detailed timesheet. • Sexism and inappropriate behavior: The manager made repeated inappropriate and sexist comments, crossed boundaries with staff, and retaliated if he didn’t like you. He openly gloated about upsetting both staff and guests, calling himself “the devil” with pride. • Neglect of employee well-being: Expect to stand for full 8-hour shifts with no proper breaks, especially since this property is consistently busy. Management doesn’t care if you’re overwhelmed or overworked. • Unsafe and dismissive environment: Reports of maintenance staff making women uncomfortable were brushed off. When I brought it up, the manager told me to “take it as a compliment” and warned that speaking up might delay repairs. • Low morale across departments: Housekeeping staff were often rude or uncooperative, and overall teamwork suffered due to poor leadership.

Pros

The staff and co-workers you'll get to know are some of the most wonderful people. You get every opportunity to make someones day in the hotel business.

Cons

Communication with management is unreliable. I witnessed discrimination and bullying get reported multiple times by the victims of one of the employees. This person then continued to work there, seemingly without any consequences for their actions. I have no words or explanation as to why, or what the reasoning is beyond favoritism. Discrimination alone should be a zero tolerance rule in any workplace, especially in a hotel where hospitality is supposed to be the main driving factor for the business itself.

Typical Hotel--Terrible

Pros

When it was slow I could work on my homework. Meeting guests from all over the world is sometimes fun.

Cons

All hotels are toxic in general. Hard work for very little pay. Guests treat staff horribly and staff is expected to take it with a smile. NO work life balance--expect to work every weekend, night, and holiday.

Pros

The employees were very nice.

Cons

Worst management I experienced, they were condescending and rude, from what I observed staff seemed fearful of reprisal to make objective comments.

Pros

Colleagues were nice and friendly.

Cons

I worked here as a young woman in 2020 when I was around 22. During this time I learned how horrible people can be just by witnessing the ownership of this hotel. The family that runs this hotel in Guelph and Fairfield Inn and Spark by Hilton (and many other chains in other cities in Ontario) is truly psychopathic and devoid of any redeemable human qualities. They stop at nothing to get money. They will oversell rooms, go back on their word, fully charge people for not being able to stay their whole booked stay even if it’s an emergency (once it was a father whose child literally died and still wasn’t refunded). They are verbally and emotionally abusive to their staff. When I was hired, the manager that hired me went out of his way to do so. I now realize it’s because he was trying to groom me. He spoke of paying for prostitution and heavily implied and insinuated he’d pay me if I ever serviced him or his friends. I quit that place in tears after a few months, walking out on the job after being told if I do that, I won’t get paid my final paycheck. Luckily we had a union. Please don’t work at these locations. No amount of money can justify working for such a group of true swines. They are truly scum of the earth and their downfall is coming to them.

Pros

Fun job fairly calm in the mornings. Team spirit is good. Free breakfast usually. Beautiful surroundings. Hotel discount benefits. Nice staff.

Cons

Gets very busy at night with tour buses, but manageable. Training can be confusing. Computer system in 2024 was not the best.

Pros

Consistent hours, employee discount for hotel stays was a big bonus, owners and management was generally always on-call to assist with any problems.

Cons

Management was unable to resolve conflicts between staff, members of management caused a significant amount if drama and often created a hostile work environment.
