Not what it used to be

Pros

Products are good quality but expensive

Cons

The culture at Lakeshore has changed a lot ever since Leonard Green took over, and it feels like the Kaplans have taken their hands off the company. What used to be a people first and supportive environment is now the opposite. Employee care is no longer a priority. Favoritism is obvious, and if you kiss up you get ahead. If you do not, you are ignored. Salaried employees are expected to work constant overtime with no respect for work life balance. It feels like you have to sell your soul just to keep up. People are unhappy and morale is very low across the company. Lakeshore used to feel like a family, but now employees feel replaceable and unheard. I recommend thinking carefully before joining unless real changes are made.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and your concerns. This past year brought significant changes, and navigating those shifts while staying dedicated to educators and families required our teams to show up in new ways. It sounds like part of your experience was particularly challenging, and there is an opportunity for us to reflect on that. We’re committed to learning from all experiences and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. –Employee Experience Team

Pros

- Great coworkers - You feel like you’re part of a family at Lakeshore - Relatively good benefits

Cons

- Too many inconsistencies from team to team, which hinders cross-collaboration - Very difficult to grow your career at Lakeshore in most positions - Compensation is well below market value for many roles, but they will say it’s within industry standard - Overworked and underpaid in many roles…you will encounter many people who have done the same role for years without a promotion or clear career paths yet they will continue to take on more tasks and dip their hands in other areas that should technically be a pay grade or role above them - Having worked on various teams and with many different people at Lakeshore, your experience will vary completely based on who your boss and immediate team members are - Lakeshore seems to have lost their way a bit since bringing in outside influences to their business - I was part of the first round of layoffs and it seems like they keep letting more people go…people are worried for their jobs - When layoffs did start happening, people were offered roles completely different than what they were actually doing, and it felt like the company was trying to save face to say they didn’t lay people off, but rather tried to get them other roles within the company instead…which really doesn’t add up because the positions being offered were irrelevant to the skillset and seniority employees had - Annual employee surveys don’t seem to be taken as seriously as they should - The reevaluation of job title tiers versus compensation was completely off-point for a number of positions within the company, which now I’m thinking may have been foreshadowing all of the layoffs to follow. The most recent role I held at the company was not rated at the tier it should have been after that companywide study.

Pros

My department (PDS) was the best part of my work experience at this company. I worked with truly talented, caring, and collaborative people. My team was always positive and supportive, as was our supervisor. The leadership of our department was typically positive and I learned a lot from their guidance. The travel for this position offered vast networking with organizations all over the country and helped to broaden my perspective on the field of early education. I'm incredibly grateful for this team and the work we shared together!

Cons

The compensation for this position was not sufficient for the demands of the role. There was also very limited opportunity to be promoted or gain increases in salary. Employees were explicitly and repeatedly told we would not get pay increases, and later found out this rule was seemingly limited to our department while other departments did get yearly increases. We were told this was due to the bonus structure, but in the years I worked here I did not ever receive a bonus. So after several years of very hard work and providing reliably high-quality customer experiences that increased our business - I did not receive an increase in my wages. When things in the industry went into a downturn recently, we were told we would need to work in a 'do more with less' mindset and this was really disappointing after already outperforming my rate of pay for several years. There were continuous limitations on personal time off which caused difficulty for a healthy work/life balance. This, coupled with the uncompetitive compensation, meant that job satisfaction was highly reliant on the job itself and the work culture. The company did not always utilize my department to its fullest potential and it often felt like we were a forgotten side dish. When we were often the most knowledgeable customer-facing employees in their toolkit. I was laid off, after several rounds of company lay-offs, and this process was handled very poorly. They pulled me and several of my teammates into the same zoom call to let us go at the same time. Forcing us to experience each other's reactions without any thoughtful time to discuss our feelings or effectively ask questions about the process before they immediately launched into making sure they collected a list of our company-issued technology (as if they didn't have this list already). This experience really sealed the entire experience working for Lakeshore to me - they used my skills for their benefit for years acting like I was part of their 'family' and treated me like a total stranger on the way out. I've been laid off before, but this was truly the worst I've been treated and I'll never forgive this company for being so cold and heartless after years of my dedication. And this failure is theirs to own due to poor business decisions. The PDS department continued to out perform our expectations year-over-year and yet they gutted the department to save money company-wide.

Thank you for sharing how this experience felt from your perspective; while this was not the intention, we are incredibly sorry to hear you didn't feel cared for. We aimed to approach this difficult process with thoughtfulness and care, supporting those impacted while also communicating quickly and clearly with those who were not which meant not everyone could have a 1:1 conversation. Hearing how it landed with you is important for our continued learning. We remain committed to putting people at the center of how we operate, especially during the difficult moments no one hopes to experience. Thank you for sharing your feedback. - Employee Experience Team

Pros

We used to work from home until January this year. We used to have fun events like coffee trucks and fun summer events and holiday parties We used to have raises every year. We had lots of flexibility to do our job and attend family events and make up the work time later that day.

Cons

Return to office starting this year, 3-5 days a week depending on the department. No more fun events. No raises or bonuses next year. Due to everyone being back in office we are all cramped in tiny rooms not having any personal space. Employee morale is so low it can be felt in the hallways but everyone is pretending to feel fine so they don’t get in trouble with management.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. We’re sorry you didn’t see the mutual benefits of a return to the office. Lakeshore has always been a team environment with lots of cross-department collaboration, and we see a noticeable boost in our work and culture when we’re all in the office together. We know we had a lot of fun events in the past, and we hope to bring those back in the future. But by holding off on some of our larger celebrations now, we’re supporting the best interests of our employees and company. Similarly, we know that a year without raises and bonuses can be frustrating, and we didn’t make that decision lightly. Ultimately, tough choices like these will ensure the long-term health of our company, which benefits all of us. Thanks again for posting your review, and we wish you the best of luck in your next position! –Employee Experience Team

Pros

Decent benefits and many departments work hybrid or primarily remote.

Cons

Low pay makes it impossible to afford living in LA. Lakeshore talks a lot of talk about employee retention, loyalty, and caring like a family about it's employees. Didn't stop them laying off people who'd given 10 years or more.

Pros

I learned SO MUCH from this job, the training is intense and there is so much information they give you. They prepare you for working with all aspects of k-12, EC, and more. The job is really rewarding, good work. I loved the customers and my teammates.

Cons

The leadership and management of this company is lunacy. They made so many bad decisions over the last year or so, and it has put them in a really bad place for 2026. They don't trust their employees, they micromanage to the most extreme I have ever seen, and the inside sales leadership doesn't have their priorities straight. They don't care if you hit your goals or if you achieve your targets, they care if you have enough dials and virtual meetings, and if you met 20 other KPIs that don't actually correlate to revenue.

Pros

Good pay and benefits (before they cut raises and bonuses)

Cons

No work life balance. Management does not care about employees. There is a cult like atmosphere. There are a considerable amount of Directors who are condescending and unprofessional to work with, This was one of the worst companies I worked for. I would NEVER recommend anyone work here.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We’re glad our pay and benefits stood out positively, as our teams work hard to ensure we remain competitive in the market. We understand that pausing bonuses and raises this year had a real impact on our people. It was a hard decision, made uniformly across the business, and we don’t take lightly how that affected individuals and their families. We have high standards for our leaders when it comes to culture, and leaders are expected to roll up their sleeves alongside their teams. We’re sorry that wasn’t your experience, and we genuinely wish you’d felt comfortable raising these concerns while you were with us. We hope your next opportunity is a better fit and wish you all the best. –Employee Experience Team
