      Consultant Interview

      1 Jul 2010
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Washington, DC
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Booz Allen Hamilton (Washington, DC) in May 2010

      Interview

I contacted a friend of mine to connect me with people in BAH. He was able to refer me to a recruiter who reviewed my resume and within a week called me for a screening interview. Questions were pretty standard, 'Why do you want to go into consulting?', 'What kind of work are you interested in?', etc. I submitted my resume online for Technology consulting based on my engineering background, but after my screening interview, the recruiter thought that I would be a great fit for Strategy consulting. I agreed to give it a shot. Between that first screening call and the actual interview, communication was exceptional. There were several "preparation" calls with groups of candidates led by the recruiter. The first was a general overview of the company, stating that it was a public sector consulting firm (government organizations), the traditional career path of a consultant, culture, location and travel (little travel outside of DC), the differences between public and private sector consulting, lifestyles, project duration and managerial structure. She then allowed the group to ask any questions that we had and say 'yes' or 'no' in an email following the session as to whether we would like to interview. We were given an "interview day" date, as they hosted multiple people at once. A second "preparation" call detailed the schedule for the day, informing us about the structure of the Strategy organization, salary ranges for the levels of consultants (your level would be determined after your interview), and generally what to expect. We were told that BAH doesn't do case interviews, just behavioral. The company paid for travel and lodging, but didn't really give you a choice as to the times at which you traveled. I have a full time job and they just picked a flight for me, without asking my availability, and when I tried to inquire about this, they were pretty unresponsive. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and proceeded. There were about 25 people being interviewed that day, mostly candidates directly from business school or experienced hires. The day started with a welcome, and color coded name tags were handed out to break the group into smaller groups that would be separated until the interview. We first all had a senior partner tell us more about the Strategy org, give a background of their life with the company and ask any questions. Each group had a fairly recent hire tell us about 'a day in the life of a BAH consultant'. We then went on a tour of their technology facilities. The interviews were hosted all at once in a large room, where each candidate sat at a small table with their respective interviewer. I had a sr partner, who was very cool, but apparently hadn't a) even looked at my resume before the interview and b) hadn't been filled in that though I had "Technology Consultant" written in my objective, was funneled into Strategy by my recruiter. So he spent a lot of time reviewing the resume as I sat there, and asking about why I was interviewing for Strategy. He asked very basic questions such as 'Where do I see myself in the company?', and just to explain some experiences based on my resume. He also asked me if I wanted to go on and interview with the Technology group, so that I may have my pick. I also got to ask him a few questions about the org. After the interview, we all reconvened for a meeting with ALL the recruiters, who asked us how our experiences were and if we had any positive and negative feedback about the process. They gave more time for Q&A, and we all headed to the airport for our return home. The recruiters were to call everyone on the weekend to give the their feedback from the interview and to either say 'yay' or 'nay' for moving on with the hiring process, or extending an offer. I missed the feedback call, but was left a vmail from my recruiter to call back. The same day I returned the call, but didn't get a call back. AT ALL. I called and left 3 messages via phone and 1 via email and not a single call was returned. I had made a lot of connections with the other candidates there, and about 7 others said they didn't get any offer or even a rejection call after they were given their interview feedback. No correspondence whatsoever. After contacting some guys that I know that work there currently, they informed me that BAH takes a LONG time to hire people. One said it took them 2 MONTHS to get back to him, but he took a chance with them anyway. It's been over a month, and I still haven't even gotten my feedback from the interview. I did talk to someone who got an offer this week, and they were almost insulted with the salary, as it was substantially lower than what they currently made. So they refused to accept. As of now, still waiting to hear back, even though I've gotten and offer and accepted at a different firm.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Noting difficult. They were all standard behavioral, no case interviews. It was more of a conversation with the interviewer based on what is on the resume. So, just be able to speak to your resume.

      Interview

The Booz Allen consultant interview process was pretty straightforward—started with a recruiter screen, then a couple of behavioral interviews, and a case-style or problem-solving conversation. Overall, it focused a lot on teamwork, communication, and how you think through challenges. It felt professional but conversational.
