68% positive business outlook
Pros
- Ability to have work/life balance in consulting (you don't have to manage early morning/late night meetings to accommodate off-shore teams) - Educational opportunities (they have a partnership with edX where you can take online courses for free through top-ranked universities) - Open door policy with leadership: despite their busy schedules, I know they are always easily accessible through Slack if any questions arise - Remote options + flexibility - The CXG Team (sounds cheesy, but they are truly some of the most friendly, down-to-earth people I've ever met - ESPECIALLY in the business world) This is the first company I've worked for where I've been able to name all of my team members and also know their family members as well Coming from a large company (200K+ people) where I was often told "That's just the way we do it", CompassX was definitely a positive change where I finally felt heard and could see my suggestions put into action. I appreciate that they value "breadth vs. depth", and encourage you to expand your current knowledge and skillsets, versus being stuck in your current pathway. The holidays are definitely my favorite time with the company, as they have provided a full Thanksgiving dinner from Marie Calendars for my entire family (which saved me from SO much time and stress). I also look forward to the Company's Holiday Party each year, which brings the team and our families all together to celebrate with a nice dinner and tons of giveaways. Despite us being primarily remote, the events committee works hard to put together events that are fun and brings the team together (both in-person and virtually). I appreciate that they cater to various interests (Top Golf, Virtual Escape Room, Duffy Boat Scavenger Hunt, Wine Tasting, etc.) With the upcoming uncertainty in the economy, the leadership team has been very transparent with us on the health of the company - which luckily is going strong, and we are still growing the team (despite the massive layoffs that have been occurring throughout the tech world).
Cons
Companies I have worked for previously have offered more PTO (4 weeks vs. 3 weeks a year) more paid holidays and more sick time. However, they were a much larger size, had more resources, and significantly less work/life balance. When it comes down to it, you need to pick what you value, and for me personally, it was balancing day-to-day vs. vacations. That being said, the leadership team conducted many external surveys this year to better evaluate and prioritize our benefits package based on our team members' responses/requests and announced at our last "All Hands" meeting the new positive changes coming in 2023 (another floating holiday + 401K matching, etc). I will be honest, there are definitely growing pains (hence the 4 stars vs. 5-star rating). With being a newish/smaller company, there are not always the same resources that are available with larger firms. That's where I'm grateful that we have such a passionate and proactive team who are always quick to volunteer and see employee-driven initiatives come to life (increasing educational opportunities, more events, revamp of the website, etc).
Pros
-Grow your career alongside a growing company (lots of room for growth) -Make an impact for clients as a trusted advisor & drive internal strategy -No travel & better work-life balance -High variable comp...earn bonuses based on your performance alone -Good culture and benefits
Cons
-Start-up environment; things change quickly & you have to be willing to roll with it -Don't have the backing of a big firm, takes more to prove yourself with client -Responsible for driving your career forward and asking for what you want
Pros
The free Thanksgiving meals we’ve gotten the past few years were nice.
Cons
CompassX clap for taking advantage of government relief funds and employees! You can actually see that Kyle took out a $500k PPP loan during COVID but still laid people off anyway and some were furloughed. He never shared anything about this with employees and we for sure did not feel the effects an extra $500k of cash would’ve brought in. I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept that money for himself. Most of these loans were forgiven so he probably didn’t even have to pay it back. The Fed had a study that found that 75% of these loans didn’t go to the employees and were pocketed. I would bet my money that the owner isn’t in the 25% that used the money to help his employees. The loan and this Fed study are both public so go see for yourself. Company leaders act like they know better than everyone else but all they do is talk in buzzwords and send out bad slides they spent 5 minutes making. Good to know they take the biggest cut out of everyone’s work by adding 0 value whatsoever while the rest of us are left alone to sink or swim on our projects. There is no growth. You can do a great job and your client can love you to death but these guys will come up with BS metrics to keep you from getting a bonus/pay bump/promotion. I received pennies or nothing after every performance review even when I far exceeded the hours they wanted me to work. Anyone you see that gets promoted just sucks up to leadership. Too many dumb in-person things they want us to do. There are Slacks every 2 weeks with some kind of gathering or a request for someone to plan one. If you want us to bill more stop making us get drinks all the time and let us work. Subpar benefits. Not a lot of PTO which you get guilt tripped for taking. Insurance coverage is not great but you have a lot of choices and it’s getting better I guess. There are no other worthwhile perks working at CompassX.
Pros
I joined in late 2022 and was immediately placed on a project. I have been happy with my project work and my experience with the overall company. There are a lot of opportunities to get more involved in the company and gain mentorship from the leaders and your peers. Whereas you can often feel insignificant at a big firm, you feel like you have a direct impact when working at CompassX (which can be a good or bad thing depending on your personality). I like that the company is local and also serves clients in southern California. It means less travel for us consultants and generally a better work-life balance. There are no outrageous utilization targets either (i.e., they are reasonable and incentivize the right behaviors). Benefits are good too. Besides the standard benefits, they offer a technology stipend (instead of giving you a company-issued laptop). The company also offers a 401K program with match. Compensation seemed competitive compared to other similar-sized firms. The firm also gives additional floating holidays when targets are met, which is a great perk. On a personal note, I was very pleased with the way that CompassX handled my PTO. I had booked an international trip for the holidays last year, but I didn't have enough PTO since I had just joined the company. I told my leadership about my situation and offered to do client work while traveling to minimize my PTO. I was fully expecting to take the PTO unpaid, but to my surprise, CompassX allowed me to let my PTO enter a negative balance. It was very generous of them, especially since I had only been at the company for a few months. Though I think it tells you the type of people who manage the company and how they care for their people.
Cons
Most of the project work is solo (i.e., individual contributor projects vs team projects). That being said, there is a lot of momentum to see solution-based projects rather than individual contributor or staff-augmentation work. I suspect that we will be able to get more team-based work once we have a larger client footprint. The only other con was that employee start dates are sometimes delayed to match with a project start date (to minimize bench time). This wasn't an issue for me, but I think others would find it difficult to coordinate. Just something to consider if you are in the process of interviewing with the firm.
Pros
Small firm with less bureaucracy than the big firms they recruit from Competitive discretionary pay Mostly local roles and opportunities
Cons
Leadership reacts and isn't proactive Opportunities for career growth are minimal Beware of the opportunities that may be pitched to you, they may not be fully realized and you'll be asked to interview not only CompassX management but potential clients they are pursuing opportunities with, you won't be hired unless you also impress the client and agrees to bring you onboard Benefits are not comparable with the large firms as pitched
Pros
It's a great company to work with. Colleagues are willing to help and invest in the success of each other and the company. Pay and benefits are competitive. A boutique firm feel - which is great in that it gives one the opportunity to help grow the company and culture. Clients are top-tier industry leaders. The work-life balance is good and still provides for career growth and advancement.
Cons
Being a smaller firm means that you are on smaller teams (possibly as an individual contributor) which might be a "con" for some people. It is not for me. The company processes are still maturing which might cause frustration for some. I'm ok with this because what I see from leadership is a dedication to maturing well. The progress that I have experienced has been influenced by the employees. All-in-all what I would hope for from an employer.
Pros
Joining CompassX has been a solely positive move for my career. I wasn't sure what exactly to expect after having spent my entire consulting career thus far at a large firm. However, the career opportunities, pay, and most benefits have significantly exceeded my expectations. Going to CompassX has been an exciting and unique career move. CompassX is currently small, but the consultants here are highly experienced, and very skilled/reputable, giving growing consultants an exciting opportunity to work alongside and learn directly from experts in the field. The firm is seeing unprecedented growth rates due to the positive client reviews we're receiving. Many of our consulting roles are for highly visible projects, and our consultants work directly with C-suite and director level stakeholders. Joining CompassX from a larger consulting firm has given me more opportunities for leadership roles, and has pushed me to my highest potential. The people at the firm are wonderful to work with and really care about making our culture inclusive, fun, and family-oriented. The firm does regular outings, often in more than one location to accommodate employees that live on opposite sides of town. Outings vary from happy hours, to outdoor adventures, to charity events - so there really is something for everyone to get involved with. The community pmo team regularly checks the company's pulse on employee experience, and appears to be actively addressing employee concerns and questions. From a financial perspective, the rates here are extremely competitive and the bonus potential is higher than most (if not all) consulting firms, without sacrificing a low baseline salary. Additionally, consultants are rewarded periodically for their efforts, and consultants that go above and beyond do receive recognition.
Cons
CompassX is a growing firm, so some internal processes and procedures are still being refined and developed. However, this doesn't have to be a con if you're someone who enjoys being a part of a growing business. When you join CompassX, you'll have ample opportunities to help out in areas you are interested in (without being required to, if you choose to opt out) spanning all internal processes such as recruiting, account management, solution development, and more. While you will be assigned a CXG leader, account lead, and peer you meet biweekly/monthly with, you may or may not have much additional support on the projects you're assigned to as we are a highly lean/nimble group due to our size. When joining CXG, you should be comfortable with a fairly large amount of autonomy in your client and internal work. Several of the consultants here operate nearly fully autonomously with our clients.
Pros
I joined CompassX from a mid-sized consulting firm and so far it's been a great move. I feel like my perspectives and experience are valued and are seen as a benefit to the company, and the people who I work with really seem to care. The work itself feels meaningful, with interesting projects where each win (big or small) seems to have a big impact and celebrated by everyone. Since joining, the practice areas seem to be evolving and maturing, and I've been able to sharpen my skills by being pushed outside my comfort zone at times. Unlike my last company, there are no mandatory CompassX office days, but I know where the leaders or colleagues are each week if I want to meet in person. I've also enjoyed the in person events and other team meet ups,
Cons
As it's a small firm, sometimes there can be missing pieces or gaps e.g. there aren’t always standardized tools, predefined templates or playbooks like at larger consultancies. Sometimes this means more freedom to do things your own way, but can be frustrating if starting from scratch too often. The teams are pretty lean so work can get busy for short bursts of time to meet client expectations. Also need to be willing to wear multiple hats or flex into other areas to keep the show on the road.
Pros
- Growth - Exposure - Direct Connection to the executive team - Open communication (no corporate red tape) - Large clients and no constant fear of the hammer - Company events feel inclusive
Cons
- Size - Mentorship - Benefits are at industry standard rather than exceeding
