Pros

- Ability to have work/life balance in consulting (you don't have to manage early morning/late night meetings to accommodate off-shore teams) - Educational opportunities (they have a partnership with edX where you can take online courses for free through top-ranked universities) - Open door policy with leadership: despite their busy schedules, I know they are always easily accessible through Slack if any questions arise - Remote options + flexibility - The CXG Team (sounds cheesy, but they are truly some of the most friendly, down-to-earth people I've ever met - ESPECIALLY in the business world) This is the first company I've worked for where I've been able to name all of my team members and also know their family members as well Coming from a large company (200K+ people) where I was often told "That's just the way we do it", CompassX was definitely a positive change where I finally felt heard and could see my suggestions put into action. I appreciate that they value "breadth vs. depth", and encourage you to expand your current knowledge and skillsets, versus being stuck in your current pathway. The holidays are definitely my favorite time with the company, as they have provided a full Thanksgiving dinner from Marie Calendars for my entire family (which saved me from SO much time and stress). I also look forward to the Company's Holiday Party each year, which brings the team and our families all together to celebrate with a nice dinner and tons of giveaways. Despite us being primarily remote, the events committee works hard to put together events that are fun and brings the team together (both in-person and virtually). I appreciate that they cater to various interests (Top Golf, Virtual Escape Room, Duffy Boat Scavenger Hunt, Wine Tasting, etc.) With the upcoming uncertainty in the economy, the leadership team has been very transparent with us on the health of the company - which luckily is going strong, and we are still growing the team (despite the massive layoffs that have been occurring throughout the tech world).

Cons

Companies I have worked for previously have offered more PTO (4 weeks vs. 3 weeks a year) more paid holidays and more sick time. However, they were a much larger size, had more resources, and significantly less work/life balance. When it comes down to it, you need to pick what you value, and for me personally, it was balancing day-to-day vs. vacations. That being said, the leadership team conducted many external surveys this year to better evaluate and prioritize our benefits package based on our team members' responses/requests and announced at our last "All Hands" meeting the new positive changes coming in 2023 (another floating holiday + 401K matching, etc). I will be honest, there are definitely growing pains (hence the 4 stars vs. 5-star rating). With being a newish/smaller company, there are not always the same resources that are available with larger firms. That's where I'm grateful that we have such a passionate and proactive team who are always quick to volunteer and see employee-driven initiatives come to life (increasing educational opportunities, more events, revamp of the website, etc).

Thank you for recognizing the opportunities that CompassX provides our team for growth, direct connection to leaders, and fun networking events with some of the best “down to earth people” you’ve come across in the business world. We’re grateful that you understand the time the leadership team carves out each month to connect with every single one of our employees. Each company executive has about 10 employees with whom they meet each month for a direct 1:1. Additionally, our President and Founder meets with small groups of 3-5 people each month to cover a variety of topics and to gather ideas on everything from new directions to simply identifying what we need to change. One of those ideas, as you highlighted, was the need for more formalized training, which spawned an internal project to evaluate and select an on-demand training solution for our team members. As you also mentioned, based on feedback from team members such as yourself we have indeed increased PTO/holidays and versioned up our retirement plan. We will continue to prioritize open communication, feedback channels, and inclusiveness! We are excited to have you as part of our growing team! - CompassX Executive Leadership Team

We are very appreciative of your rating “best-in-class” and aim to be nothing less! We created a local consulting model over a decade ago, so our consultants do not have to travel extensively anymore. However, that is not the only contributor to work/life balance at CompassX. Our consultants also have lower utilization targets than our competitors, enjoy paid time off, and contribute to internal initiatives. Thank you for being with us. Let’s keep building something great together! - CompassX Executive Leadership Team

Pros

The free Thanksgiving meals we’ve gotten the past few years were nice.

Cons

CompassX clap for taking advantage of government relief funds and employees! You can actually see that Kyle took out a $500k PPP loan during COVID but still laid people off anyway and some were furloughed. He never shared anything about this with employees and we for sure did not feel the effects an extra $500k of cash would’ve brought in. I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept that money for himself. Most of these loans were forgiven so he probably didn’t even have to pay it back. The Fed had a study that found that 75% of these loans didn’t go to the employees and were pocketed. I would bet my money that the owner isn’t in the 25% that used the money to help his employees. The loan and this Fed study are both public so go see for yourself. Company leaders act like they know better than everyone else but all they do is talk in buzzwords and send out bad slides they spent 5 minutes making. Good to know they take the biggest cut out of everyone’s work by adding 0 value whatsoever while the rest of us are left alone to sink or swim on our projects. There is no growth. You can do a great job and your client can love you to death but these guys will come up with BS metrics to keep you from getting a bonus/pay bump/promotion. I received pennies or nothing after every performance review even when I far exceeded the hours they wanted me to work. Anyone you see that gets promoted just sucks up to leadership. Too many dumb in-person things they want us to do. There are Slacks every 2 weeks with some kind of gathering or a request for someone to plan one. If you want us to bill more stop making us get drinks all the time and let us work. Subpar benefits. Not a lot of PTO which you get guilt tripped for taking. Insurance coverage is not great but you have a lot of choices and it’s getting better I guess. There are no other worthwhile perks working at CompassX.

As someone who is ultimately responsible for the decisions impacting cash flow and treasury functions, the PPP program was a great success. At CompassX, during what was a once-in-a-one-hundred-year black swan event, the PPP loan was used to pay and retain impacted employees and then hire anew as the business environment improved. Audits and reviews were performed by the Small Business Association, a prominent regional bank, and a national CPA firm to ensure appropriate controls and compliance. Ultimately, I needed to personally guarantee any loans with my family’s personal assets. As with any government assistance program, there will always be fraud and mis-use. I hope those cases are discovered and prosecuted to prevent inappropriate allocation of taxpayer dollars. CompassX was a net positive job-creator during that season of uncertainty, exactly what the PPP program set out to do. Towards the tail end of the pandemic, a majority of our employees wanted more opportunities to meet up (both informal and formal). These events are always optional and allow us to build intra-company relationships, recognize the great work our team members achieve, and have fun! At CompassX our most important core value was and remains “Team & Family.” We will always strive to present opportunities for people to connect to build an inclusive, team-centric culture despite being part of an industry that tends to be physically remote and decentralized. - Kyle Heppenstall, Founder and President

Pros

I joined in late 2022 and was immediately placed on a project. I have been happy with my project work and my experience with the overall company. There are a lot of opportunities to get more involved in the company and gain mentorship from the leaders and your peers. Whereas you can often feel insignificant at a big firm, you feel like you have a direct impact when working at CompassX (which can be a good or bad thing depending on your personality). I like that the company is local and also serves clients in southern California. It means less travel for us consultants and generally a better work-life balance. There are no outrageous utilization targets either (i.e., they are reasonable and incentivize the right behaviors). Benefits are good too. Besides the standard benefits, they offer a technology stipend (instead of giving you a company-issued laptop). The company also offers a 401K program with match. Compensation seemed competitive compared to other similar-sized firms. The firm also gives additional floating holidays when targets are met, which is a great perk. On a personal note, I was very pleased with the way that CompassX handled my PTO. I had booked an international trip for the holidays last year, but I didn't have enough PTO since I had just joined the company. I told my leadership about my situation and offered to do client work while traveling to minimize my PTO. I was fully expecting to take the PTO unpaid, but to my surprise, CompassX allowed me to let my PTO enter a negative balance. It was very generous of them, especially since I had only been at the company for a few months. Though I think it tells you the type of people who manage the company and how they care for their people.

Cons

Most of the project work is solo (i.e., individual contributor projects vs team projects). That being said, there is a lot of momentum to see solution-based projects rather than individual contributor or staff-augmentation work. I suspect that we will be able to get more team-based work once we have a larger client footprint. The only other con was that employee start dates are sometimes delayed to match with a project start date (to minimize bench time). This wasn't an issue for me, but I think others would find it difficult to coordinate. Just something to consider if you are in the process of interviewing with the firm.

Great to hear your CompassX experience is off to a solid start and we appreciate your perspective. We’re excited that you feel a sense of significance and impact while working here. That’s exactly the idea this company was founded upon - that what you do every day matters. We strive to provide a better work/life balance for our employees, and we appreciate that our local focus and client base in Southern California has contributed to this. We also take pride in offering competitive compensation, benefits, and additional perks such as the technology stipend, 401K program with match, and floating holidays. Your feedback regarding project work being predominantly “individual contributor” is valuable to us. We are afforded strategic leadership roles on programs which is something we’d like to continue. That said, as you mentioned, we are actively working toward expanding our client footprint and elevating the work we do to include more team and outcome-based projects. We also acknowledge that coordinating employee start dates with project start dates can be challenging and are continuously improving our processes in this regard. We have worked hard to keep the gap to a minimum. We genuinely appreciate your positive remarks about how we handled your PTO situation and your recognition of our management's care for our people. Thank you for your insights and feedback. We value your contributions and are committed to providing an even better experience for our employees at CompassX! - CompassX Executive Leadership Team

Pros

Small firm with less bureaucracy than the big firms they recruit from Competitive discretionary pay Mostly local roles and opportunities

Cons

Leadership reacts and isn't proactive Opportunities for career growth are minimal Beware of the opportunities that may be pitched to you, they may not be fully realized and you'll be asked to interview not only CompassX management but potential clients they are pursuing opportunities with, you won't be hired unless you also impress the client and agrees to bring you onboard Benefits are not comparable with the large firms as pitched

At CompassX, we are continuously working to improve our employee experience. We have a well-defined career model and transparent annual review process. We have clearly documented expectations at every level and multiple career path opportunities for our team members including practice leadership, account leadership, community development and sales-focused roles. Unlike many of the big firms, we do not have defined sales targets for Senior Managers, affording them more time to focus on delivery, client relationships, and participating in community activities. We have a strong and effective mentorship program. At CompassX, career opportunities are customized to you as an individual and are almost limitless. We try to match our team members with the best projects so that they will enjoy their work and build long lasting relationships. Since our consultants tend to take on key project leadership roles, most clients prefer to meet the person that will be running their project (i.e., conduct a Client Interview/”CI”). Therefore, we do our best to familiarize our consultants with the role, client’s culture, and expectations. Our team members appreciate the ability to get to know the client before making a commitment. Finally, in 2022 we continued to improve our benefits package to include a company-matched 401(k) retirement plan, additional PTO and holidays, and one of the best health insurance coverages in the state of California for both employees and their families. These changes were directly derived from employee feedback and ranking of the benefits they wanted to see improved. - CompassX Executive Leadership Team

Pros

It's a great company to work with. Colleagues are willing to help and invest in the success of each other and the company. Pay and benefits are competitive. A boutique firm feel - which is great in that it gives one the opportunity to help grow the company and culture. Clients are top-tier industry leaders. The work-life balance is good and still provides for career growth and advancement.

Cons

Being a smaller firm means that you are on smaller teams (possibly as an individual contributor) which might be a "con" for some people. It is not for me. The company processes are still maturing which might cause frustration for some. I'm ok with this because what I see from leadership is a dedication to maturing well. The progress that I have experienced has been influenced by the employees. All-in-all what I would hope for from an employer.

Thank you for the kind words and for your patience with our “maturing processes”! We are proud of our collaborative culture, competitive compensation, and benefits as you mentioned in your review. Kyle founded CompassX with the vision of allowing experienced consultants to do great project work for the same big-name clients that they were used to at other big firms. We got our start in the regulated industries space, working for Fortune 500 clients in pharma and healthcare. Years later, we’ve expanded and are now more diversified across many industries such as financial services, restaurant, consumer products, high tech and automotive industries. We’re looking forward to continued growth and opportunities for our talented team of consultants. Glad to have you on our team! - CompassX Executive Leadership Team

Pros

Joining CompassX has been a solely positive move for my career. I wasn't sure what exactly to expect after having spent my entire consulting career thus far at a large firm. However, the career opportunities, pay, and most benefits have significantly exceeded my expectations. Going to CompassX has been an exciting and unique career move. CompassX is currently small, but the consultants here are highly experienced, and very skilled/reputable, giving growing consultants an exciting opportunity to work alongside and learn directly from experts in the field. The firm is seeing unprecedented growth rates due to the positive client reviews we're receiving. Many of our consulting roles are for highly visible projects, and our consultants work directly with C-suite and director level stakeholders. Joining CompassX from a larger consulting firm has given me more opportunities for leadership roles, and has pushed me to my highest potential. The people at the firm are wonderful to work with and really care about making our culture inclusive, fun, and family-oriented. The firm does regular outings, often in more than one location to accommodate employees that live on opposite sides of town. Outings vary from happy hours, to outdoor adventures, to charity events - so there really is something for everyone to get involved with. The community pmo team regularly checks the company's pulse on employee experience, and appears to be actively addressing employee concerns and questions. From a financial perspective, the rates here are extremely competitive and the bonus potential is higher than most (if not all) consulting firms, without sacrificing a low baseline salary. Additionally, consultants are rewarded periodically for their efforts, and consultants that go above and beyond do receive recognition.

Cons

CompassX is a growing firm, so some internal processes and procedures are still being refined and developed. However, this doesn't have to be a con if you're someone who enjoys being a part of a growing business. When you join CompassX, you'll have ample opportunities to help out in areas you are interested in (without being required to, if you choose to opt out) spanning all internal processes such as recruiting, account management, solution development, and more. While you will be assigned a CXG leader, account lead, and peer you meet biweekly/monthly with, you may or may not have much additional support on the projects you're assigned to as we are a highly lean/nimble group due to our size. When joining CXG, you should be comfortable with a fairly large amount of autonomy in your client and internal work. Several of the consultants here operate nearly fully autonomously with our clients.

Thank you for this incredible review, we are beyond honored to have “pushed you to your fullest potential.” Being a part of a growing company is FUN! Most of us have experienced what it feels like to be in the opposite situation. By creating a community focused on growth, it helps ensure a path ‘up and to the right’. Being named “One of the Fastest Private Companies” in 2022 by Inc. 5000 was an incredible accomplishment and award. However it is NOT what makes me jump out of bed each day. For me, finding ways to grow CompassX creates new opportunities for our people. Whether that be starting a new Community of Practice, a Solution, moving into an operations role from a delivery role, promoting our operations support personnel into new roles, providing consultants opportunities to take on expanded roles (leading internal initiatives, account leadership, thought leadership, etc.), The most exciting part of our next 3-5 years of growth at CompassX will be the opportunities afforded to our consultants and internal team to grow in their careers. - Kyle Heppenstall, President and Founder

Pros

I joined CompassX from a mid-sized consulting firm and so far it's been a great move. I feel like my perspectives and experience are valued and are seen as a benefit to the company, and the people who I work with really seem to care. The work itself feels meaningful, with interesting projects where each win (big or small) seems to have a big impact and celebrated by everyone. Since joining, the practice areas seem to be evolving and maturing, and I've been able to sharpen my skills by being pushed outside my comfort zone at times. Unlike my last company, there are no mandatory CompassX office days, but I know where the leaders or colleagues are each week if I want to meet in person. I've also enjoyed the in person events and other team meet ups,

Cons

As it's a small firm, sometimes there can be missing pieces or gaps e.g. there aren’t always standardized tools, predefined templates or playbooks like at larger consultancies. Sometimes this means more freedom to do things your own way, but can be frustrating if starting from scratch too often. The teams are pretty lean so work can get busy for short bursts of time to meet client expectations. Also need to be willing to wear multiple hats or flex into other areas to keep the show on the road.

Thank you for the thoughtful review – we’re so glad to hear your experience at CompassX has been a meaningful one so far. Creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and challenged is crucial to us, so it’s great to hear that this is reflected in your experience. We also appreciate your perspective on where we can continue to evolve – as a growing firm, we know there’s still work to do in building out more structure and tools. We appreciate your review! We consider ourselves “small but mighty” since our team is packed with high caliber professionals. We’re looking to keep growing over the next decade and we’ll need your help! We are committed to providing mentorship opportunities and improving in that area as well. Access to leadership is one of the huge benefits of a smaller firm. Everyone in the company meets one-on-one with a member of our executive team monthly to talk about career growth, engagement, and how we can offer support. In addition, our President and Founder holds regular small group huddles to garner direct feedback and spark ideas for innovation. Finally, we are thrilled to have improved employee benefits for 2023. We will continue to keep listening and improving, and are grateful to have you on our team! - CompassX Executive Leadership Team
